| Parents Sue School Over Cheerleaders' Nude Photo Suspension The parents of two Seattle-area high school cheerleaders are suing the district for suspending the girls from the squad after nude photographs of them circulated via text message. The two teens were suspended from the squad — one for 30 days and one for the entire year — after school officials learned of the photos in August, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. The families suing Northshore School District weren't identified because the girls are minors. The lawsuits, filed on Nov. 17, say the district violated the girls' due process rights, according to the paper. The families allege it was unnecessary for school officials to share the photos with other staff members, and claim they were negligent in failing to report the matter to police as a potential case of child pornography. Matthew King, the attorney representing the families, told the Post-Intelligencer that it was unfair to punish the cheerleaders but not the other students who received or forwarded the photos. "We're not technically challenging the sanctions as being too strict, we're saying they weren't evenly enforced across the school," said King. "There should have been some punishment meted out to those who were in possession of the photos. ... It seems like the girls are getting the brunt of it" One of the pictures was taken three years ago and sent to the teen's then-boyfriend. The other was snapped in June. The lawsuits allege that the girls believed they had deleted the photos, but accidentally sent them to members of the football team. King says he wants the disciplinary action expunged from the girls' school records, the suspensions waved and an apology issued by the school. "This is frivolous," Northshore School District attorney Mike Patterson said. "It should never have gone to court and they (the families suing) should recognize that what happened here was created by their own doing."

| Re: Parents Sue School Over Cheerleaders' Nude Photo Suspension I saw this on tv. One of the fathers said his daughter did nothing wrong or illegal and it was done in the privacy of their home. At the time that she did it she was 13. I see something wrong with a parent saying that. If my daughter had done this, being suspended from cheerleading would be the least of her problems. |

| Re: Parents Sue School Over Cheerleaders' Nude Photo Suspension I haven't seen or heard anything about this one so I'll try and be objective, going only by what I've read here. First: Did the girls willingly and knowingly pose nude for these photo's? Or, are these alleged photos something shot by some dingleberry with their cell phone camera? If the photos were taken surripticiously then plastered on the web, the school might be acting a bit harshly. However, if the girls in question were acting like pubescent bimbos, then all bets are off and I vote they be punished. Cheerleaders, like athletes, should be role models and lead exemplary lives. If they want to act like the professional thugs we see in pro sports, then there is no place for them in primary or secondary educational athletics.

Violating their right of privacy by looking at the picture to identify them? They just have to have gotten an ACLU lawyer! That kind of twisting the law is right up their alley. I assume her claim is based on the right to anonymity, the wish to remain unnoticed or unidentified in the public realm. Guess what? When the picture was sent, of someone's free will, to the boyfriend, anonymity came to a screeching halt. If she has any possible law suit, it's against her boy friend who posted it on the net. Now, that might be construed as an invasion of privacy but against the school for looking at it? I don't think so. Not in this lifetime! Come to think about it, the State could easily go after the boyfriend for posting the picture. The last I heard posting child porn, which includes nude, salacious photos of minors in the public domain, is a pretty serious crime and will get you a "Short Eyes" rap sheet. You mean you actually support holding teenagers responsible for their actions? What message do you want to send? That there are consequences for their actions? What do you want them to become? Adults? I suggest you read Huxley's Brave New World. Everyone wants to have their freedom but no one wants to accept responsibility for their actions. In case you missed it, that was all rather "tongue-in-cheek." I agree with you. They should all learn from their misdeeds. But, unfortunately, my bet is they'll all skate, especially if the boyfriend is a jock on one of the major teams. We all know the elevated status they hold in high school, don't we? They get basically the same legal safeguards as our elected politicians. |

| Re: Parents Sue School Over Cheerleaders' Nude Photo Suspension Its been a big issue here since this came of light. They were from Bothell High School which is northeast of Seattle. I have allot of friends in Bothell and the talk is rampant over they (the cheerleaders) should be suspended or expelled. My question is, where is their modesty and/or morals? Young women today seem to not have much of that anymore. Todays society accepts too much. It's really a shame that we have gone this far. |

If a kid on the honor roll would somehow manage to screw up equally, they would get expelled and the principal would personally drive them to juvenile detention! The "Cult of the Jock" is alive and well today. It's sad. As you state, they are literally a "Protected species." |

| Re: Parents Sue School Over Cheerleaders' Nude Photo Suspension Ya'll are right, this mentality of protecting the jocks is all over the place. But the mentality of the father who said his daughter did nothing wrong and it was done in the privacy of their home, is disturbing too. Thats why alot of these kids now have no morals, because the parents don't seem to have to many. And you can't teach what you don't have yourself. |
