The 2700 active member figure impresses me more. This shows me a wide interest range, good moderation, a user-friendly program, and discussion not reduced to the lowest intelligence common denominator. It's the best forum I've run across in a long time.

How about Mr. Bob!! |

| Re: How Did You Get So Many Members! Hearing "Mr." before a first name is like fingernails on a blackboard to me. They do it down here in LA all the time and I dislike it. It's like the feeling you probably get whenever I write the title "Roush/Yates." I guess, in summation, I will defer to The Bard, when he wrote, " What's in a name? that which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet." (although I in no way be confused with plant life, unless maybe a catcus, and I smell more like Canoe than I do rose petals) |

Seems to me either "Bob" or "Tanner" or "BT" will get the job done sufficiently, 'course there's always the Curmudgeon thing, but it's so hard to spell.... Myself, I don't care what people call me as long as they call me when it's time to eat! ************ Now, back to the business at hand: the primary way we got so many members is the owner tutored his mods and admins to focus on making thread titles search engine friendly. By far, most of those 29K+ members found their way here thru a search engine (mostly Google, but others also). Because of the standards he set in the beginning, the "habit" was created and now (mostly) everyone follows suit. Very seldom do we have to "fix" a title, but it does happen. Plus, we're very picky about "newbies" making short or nonsense posts (they won't be picked up by a search engine.) But mostly it's having good members who want to have a place to discuss their sport and having fair rules that allow them to do so and having a good group of moderators who promote discussion while policing rule breakers. The long time members can tell plenty of stories about various folks who thought they could do whatever they wanted, or who thought they were smarter than the staff, or who were continually berating (flaming) other members. In every instance those folks were either shown the door (permanently) or changed their attitude. Plus, we (the staff) have "long memories" and "resources" we use to track troublemakers so we know when they try to come back "incognito." Basically, good people attract good people. No matter your age, gender, location or opinion, you receive respect from everyone here. We may disagree, but we do so respectfully. And that's really what everyone wants in the first place: somewhere they can state their opinion without being berated. Aside from the number of members, what is it about GTG that attracted you, MrBaseball?
