It's not that I need to evolve, it's just I don't need a phone that does everything. Mine lets me talk and text and thats all I need it to do. Heck most of the time my phone ain't even on ( I hate phones ).

Re: What Cool Phone Do You Work Off Of?

glad I discovered this thread .. times are slow in the racing world so I gotta do something to pass the time and what better way than looking around our great site?

my phone is a Nokia something or other. Pretty simple, though it has a lot of features that I don't use, I got it because it was a basic model that had push to talk - something I needed when I was working (driving). picked it up at Wally World 'cause it was cheaper than "renting" one from the company I was contracted to.

I have a few rules/guidelines about phone usage that I follow, whether anyone else does or not.
  • phone OFF in church, meetings, movies, weddings, and other like events. (originally I tried the vibrate feature, but decided it was useless as well as irritating.)
  • I will take a call while driving but unless it's speed dial, I don't make calls without pulling over. Since I drive a diesel dually with a 6 speed manual transmission, I find it easy to hang up when I get "busy"...
  • when I'm wondering the aisles at Wally World and somebody gets within a couple feet of me and seems to be talking to someone but it's only them and me, I join in the conversation (it's called being friendly.) I love doing it 'cause it drives home the point to the other person how rude they are being by walking around a store with a phone stuck in their ear. This past election day there was a lady who was rushing around the store, pushing a basket with 2 small things in it and the whole time she was talking to her "friend" about why her friend should vote for Barry O. She was so loud I could hear her in the next aisle .. I tried to catch her a couple times to enter into this political "discussion", but she was too fast for my old legs. This went on for almost 20 minutes!
  • If someone calls me and then says "hold on", I hang up. this is a telemarketers trick and I don't bite .. well, I take that back, I've got a heck of a bite! This even goes for folks I know who're getting that call waiting beep. The only exceptions I make are for my family, but they already know I don't appreciate it.
  • When I call a business and they answer with "Will you hold?" I answer immediately with "NO!" then count one, two and if they're not there I hang up. When (and if) I call that business again, I will complain to whoever answers the phone about their lack of courtesy the last time I called. it's amazing how complaining seems to snap most folks back to reality. but if they ignore my complaint, I ask to be connected to the senior executive officer so that I can properly register my complaint. (oh, I forgot, the first thing I do when I call a business is ask who I'm talking to .. and write down the name. I find if they give their name, and then I use it in the conversation, they realize I know who they are .. it comes in handy sometimes. It also helps when you get the telephone shuffle .. you can stop it dead by asking for their supervisor and refusing to talk to anyone who isn't a supervisor or higher.)
  • I don't answer the phone unless I want to. that's what phone mail is for. if I look at the caller ID and don't recognize it (or it's blank), I ignore the call. I've got a doctor's office that likes use a mechanical device to call after 5PM to remind me of my doctor's appointment in 2 days - even though I have my doctor's number stored in the phone, the line they call on is different.
  • I don't call people to tell them I got their call (phone mail) unless they asked me in their message to call back. (Ever heard the "passing the monkey" management ploy? Never accept the monkey if you don't have to!) I also don't call back to see if they got my message. If it's important they'll call me, if not I've got other things to do .. mostly I like to fill these voids in time by staring off into space: it helps me "focus"
  • I have accidentally left my phone at home while going shopping or out to eat. I've found that I hardly ever get a call when that happens, so I find myself doing it more often... the phone will dutifully take the message and relay it to me when I return so no big deal.
that's about it .. call me! we'll do lunch .. if we ever connect!

Good post, Your Duckiness. It must be a generational thing.

This thread did inspire me to check and see what make of cell I have, it's a Samsung with an AllTel logo on it. She Who Must Be Obeyed has an LG with a few whistles and bells which she never uses.

The only reason I had one was it was convenient when I was on the road. Now that I'm retired, when the current contract with AllTel runs out, I'm dumping them and getting the kind you pay for, so many hours at a time. In October we put a total of six minutes on ours and last month it jumped up to eleven! The reason for the increase was, in part, due to some trips to the mall we made. She Who Must be Obeyed went shopping and I went to the bar and she called me when she was finished. Cell phones are very useful for that.

You bring up a excellent point about automated answering. I want to scream every time I hear, "Your call is very important to us...blah, blah, blah." If it's so damn important, when don't you have a human being answering the phones, then?!

Then, for those who are in the transportation industry, you have the wonderful recorded driving directions tape. I firmly believe there is a special cell in the Third Level of Dantes' Hell for the imbecile who thought up THAT bright idea!

I contend that telephones in general, and cell phones in particular, are adding to the stress level facing many of us.

Lunch? Sounds good. Have your machine call my machine... Ciao.

Re: What Cool Phone Do You Work Off Of?

I just got the new blackberry storm, I am very impressed thus far. I previously had the iPhone, and liked it, however, i feel that the storm is better thus far.

I believe I have that conference call thingie on my plan. Maybe we could all get together and do lunch ..... if someone could show me how to work that part of the phone. I haven't even figured out how to answer an incoming call when I'm already talking. I do know that someone is in fact calling me by that incessant noise I hear when I'm talking to someone else.

Re: What Cool Phone Do You Work Off Of?

my phone allows you to view sports stats and games exactly how they appear on ESPN Live! so I get to track all my fav. teams during the games if I gotta go somewhere or anything. It even plays video so at touch of the screen i can watch the quarters highlights. Love this phone, and for you true "sports" fans you would understand. Got something even set up on my phone that if I walk into any church (it tracks by GPS) my phone automatically switches to silent. WHOOT WHOOT!
