September 11: A Day Of Remembrance

I would like to thank all of the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line to keep our country safe since 9-11-2001.

I for one will never forget the fellings that I felt while watching the attacks take place on that horrific day eight years ago today.

I offer my thanks to all who read this who have served our country in any way since 9-11-2001 and offer my condolences to all who have lost family members in the 2001 attacks or lost a loved one in military service to our nation.

God Bless The USA

September 11 is especially hard for me. My Dad lost his battle with cancer September 11 1992.

Re: September 11: A Day Of Remembrance

My husband and I were just talking about it. We both remember everything about that day. I heard the country song, "Where were you?" and when I got to my destination and I just sat there and thought about it. The incredible horror, the sheer unbelief, the words to describe it go on and on. And the pain.
I was disappointed there were no memorial services in town. Firetrucks went through and there was a sign at the firestation.
So many lives lost, so many others had their lives changed forever.
I say thanks to all those who served also.

And Tuck, my deepest sympathy for the added pain this day brings you.

This is true. We should never forget that terrible day. I know exactly where I was. I'm sure everyone feels the same.

Re: September 11: A Day Of Remembrance

Thanks for the post, Tuck. There are days that stick with us, ones that we can recall exactly where we were and what we were doing. My parents always said they could remember that Sunday morning when they announced on the radio that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Now, sad to say, we have our own Pearl Harbor.

I remember where I was when they announced JFK had been assassinated. (Listening to a very prohibited transistor radio during lunch in the Air Ops office at NAS Glenview). They broke with the announcement and I thought "Someone should know about this. The Dept Head was the only officer in the building at the time and I went into his office and told him what I had heard. He was incredulous and asked where I had heard it. I told him I had a Xster radio, thinking "I'm gonna really catch it for having that!" He just said, "Well, go get your radio and bring it in here, Tanner. I want to hear this!" I never did catch Hell for that radio.

I remember where I was when I first heard the Marine Barracks had been truck-bombed in Beirut. (On a destroyer headed back home to Rota from the IO. I got lifted off to Suda Bay then spent the next two months back at BIA helping to set up a comm center)

On 9/11 I was on the road. I got up in the morning and headed toward Atlanta. About twenty miles out I switched over to an Atlanta AM station to listen to one of my favourite morning talk shows. All I got a an announcement that "A second plane has just hit the WTC!" I couldn't make sense out of anything that was being said and to use an old military acronym, it was all "WTF???!!!" It sure sounded bad.
My wife was still with DOD and was assistant to the Security Officer at Homeport Pascagoula and I called her. (I still couldn't believe what I was hearing on the radio. Calling her was the only thing I could think of doing) She answered and I asked what was going on? The radio was really confusing. All she said was, "We've been attacked and I'm REALLY busy. Stay safe and I'll call you when I have a chance." My blood went cold.
The rest of the day was spent in kind of a haze.

Once more, Tuck, thanx for posting. It's a day all Americans should never forget, but unfortunately we probably will. Remember how innocuous December 7th has become?

How ironic is it that my father died on Septeember11, 1992 and my parents anniversary was December 7 ? Married in 1943 ?

Re: September 11: A Day Of Remembrance

This year I read the story of Father Judge to my nursing home residents. He is considered to be the first victim of the attacks. I posted the link below to his story. It's very touching. His friends have said he had to die so he could lead all the other souls to heaven.

The Firemen's Friar
So you are one of those saints who work with nursing home residents. I admire people who do that.
Brings to mind some who are less than saintly though. The ones who deserted their charges during Katrina.
During disasters like these we are reminded once again of the greatness human beings are capable of as well as the evil committed on September 11.

Re: September 11: A Day Of Remembrance

Yes I love my residents! I have gotten attached to some of them, some of them no longer with us. Many of them really need someone to just listen to them. I'm a speech therapist so I get to do a lot of that Most of my work frustration comes from the other employees that maybe they care, but they sure don't do a good job of it. Many of my friends think it's too sad to be in my kind of place. I don't know if I could work there forever because to me, I can get too attached. One of my favorite ladies was 92 when she passed, and she had no one. That one really upset me but I try to think of it as she had a very long fulfilling life.

On a positive side I have two residents over 100 years old on my caseload right now

Because johncraig, it was a choice between a slow death by burning or a quick one by jumping.
