Minority Hiring Interview Policy

i have a problem with this policy

(and please believe i know every race is equal, so lets not even go down that road)

the problem i have is forcing teams to do interviews they may not need

lets say a team fires their coach at the end of this season....a day later John Madden comes forward and says he would like to coach that team for a reasonable salary (Madden is just an example, i think you get the idea) can anyone really fault that team for snapping up Madden (or whomever legendary coach it may be) without interviewing a whole slew of people ?

just seems further interviews of people of any race would be a waste of everyones time, the team and the interviewee

Re: Minority Hiring Interview Policy

I agree TOTALLY, simon. I remember hearing where minority coaching candidates didn't like the policy either, because it basically forced them on occasion to fly out and conduct interviews for jobs they knew they had no chance of getting - Detroit was one, when they hired Mooch, I believe. On the other hand, I was just reading where this season there's a record number of minority head coaches in the NFL (7, I believe) so the policy does seem to be doing what the league wants it to do, even if its not perfect.

See the problem with that is...This is a capitalist society, and the signer of the check as well as the share holders should be able to sign whom ever they want without the skewed process...

Lets, see, would this work in reverse...would the NFL come up with a mandate that says teams have to draft or invite to camp 30% white running backs?...How would that fly...

(PS and Simon, buddy ...if you are keeping score...we happen to have ended up on the same side... ...don't let it happen again!...)

Re: Minority Hiring Interview Policy

That's probably the biggest problem with the policy, forcing teams to interview minority coaches. It turns into teams having token interviews and the candidates know this. But I guess it's good practice for them on their interviews.

Cool Re: Minority Hiring Interview Policy

I'm usually not a big quotas guy but I think the policy is clearly working. Even if an interview is just "token," it puts more people into the process. Maybe the minority candidate impresses the owner and word gets out, then the person is suddenly a hot commodity. When you looked at all of these mediocre white coaches get job after job, the NFL had to do something.

As an example: If Pete Carrol were black, considering hi,s failures with the Jets and Patriots, does anyone think he would have got that USC job? No way. So my point is the more in the mix, as token as it might seem the better.

Re: Minority Hiring Interview Policy

Good point Pundit, the curent policy gets people's names out there among the Management community. Otherwise, they may not get that opportunity.

well what about Art Shell, and imo, Herm Edwards who accomplished nothing with the Jets ?

they seem to have bounced back

Herm Edwards had the Jets in the playoffs all but one or two years during his run. He may not be a good gameday coach but he's a tremendous motivator.

Got it...Can I put you both down for a 30% increase in white runners and receivers in training camp?...Poor guys, they are not getting a fair look...it might help them get a CFL or Euro league job...

It took Art Shell what - 10 years to get a job and that with Al Davis again? Shell got the Raiders into a championship game. Why wasn't another organization interested in him? However, it has definitely gotten better in the last few years. They should just keep it going for another few years. It's not like they're making the owners hire the person. It's just putting more people into the process. That doesn't hurt anybody in my opinion.

If they were good enough, they'd have spots on NFL rosters

Well, perhaps, what really needs to happen is..."Give the chance at frachise ownership to a minority"...that way they can hire how they feel...

...and still on the topic of white running backs...what does it hurt to invite 5 more white runners to every camp?...the point is, its a silly policy...
