Re: 5 Best NFL Quarterbacks over the last 30 years.

[quote=Gotham Dark Knight]come, come pundit Staubach was a better quarterback than Bradshaw...[quote]

(sound of needle scratching across record)

Whoa, Gotham. Staubach better than Bradshaw? Stats, please!

Bradshaw: 168 games played; 2025 for 3901 for a 51.9% completion rate; yards per pass 7.2; total yards 27,989.

Staubach: 131 games played; 1685 for 2958 for a 57.0% completion rate; yards per pass 7.7; total yardage 22,700.

Now i realize that Staubach lost a few years in his early days, thanks to a stint in Vietnam and the subsequent QB controversy with Craig Morton, but still...the numbers aren't that much greater. Adjusted for 168 games, Staubach throws for 29,111 yards, or just over one-half of one Bradshaw season. Staubach does have a good edge in TD/interception ratio: 153/109 vs. 212/210, but it says here that Bradshaw has four Super Bowl rings (two won over Staubach's Cowboys), and Roger has one.

Now come on, Gotham. A few props for the Louisiana boy...?

As for the Kenny Stabler thing, i'm going to forget i ever read that...

Cheers, all!

As big of a supported on the rings argument as I am, Os, I'm not sure it makes up for Staubach having a better completion percentage, better yards per pass average, and a better TD to INT ratio. Bradshaw has more rings, but he had a better supporting cast too. That has to be taken into account.

Wiz my man...you forgot all the passing titles that Roger the Dodger won, of which I think there were 5...he even closed out his career with two in a row...and once a starter the man was a winner that missed the playoffs only in 1974 when the team was 8-6. Terry on the other hand, rode the Steeler D, had a corp of receivers in the late 70's that Staubach would envy, and lost his starting gig to a man by the name of Joe Gilliam once...Roger would have never lost a starting gig to a two bit hack like Gilliam...I stick with my pick of Roger over Terry...Terry was one heck of a thrower...Staubach was a complete leader.

As for the Snake, I would take him over most of the NFL passers...I was not a big fan of him, but he was good and cool under pressure...I remember Madden once saying he was calling a play ofr him in a close game...Madden was all excited and asking Stabler to pay attention...Stabler is looking at the crowd and saying "John we are really giving them their money's worth today"...to me that's a QB...A competent passer with icy water in his veins...As much as I am a big Peyton Mannnig fan, he could of used a lesson or two from Stabler on how to close out a big game...

Stats, expecially from different eras, seldom tell a complete story...

Cool Re: 5 Best NFL Quarterbacks over the last 30 years.

PS...by the way Wiz, Staubach had two rings not one...1971 verses Miami, and 1977 over the Broncos...he was MVP in the Miami win. He also pretty much played Bradshaw even in those Super Bowls...Terry had the better D and the better team...The Steeler D sacked Roger 7 times in the 1975 affair, and the D could not contain Swan...and it was still close!...even though the Cowboys came in as a Wild Card with a featured back named Robert Newhouse!...In 1978, I remember a man named Jackie Smith get hit with a Staubach pass wide open in the end zone...only to drop it...Staubach being the class act that he is, has never blamed Jackie for that one.

Okay, here it goes:

1) Dan Marino: If he had been on the 49ers, he would have won the same amount of Super Bowls as Joe Montana. Nobody I ever saw could throw the football like him. He was the best I've ever seen.

2) John Elway: Have you ever seen any QB come up so huge in the most pressurized situations? Until Terrell Davis, he never had any good receivers or RB's.

3) Joe Montana: A lot of people rate him as #1. Let's face it: The top few are splitting hairs. But Montana had much better weapons than Marino and Elway and played in a perfect offense suited to his talents.

4) Terry Bradshaw: At the beginning he had some rough years. He also played on a great team. But the bigger the game, the better he played. In those championship years he was phenominal. And he called his own plays to boot.

5) Brett Favre: Has had a rough couple of years because he tried to do too much. But in his prime, he was unreal. He had a quick release that whizzed through the air and landed right in the receivers' hands.

Who are your top 5?
I think I would add Peyton Manning to the list and knock out Bradshaw...

Re: 5 Best NFL Quarterbacks over the last 30 years.

I didn't look up any stats. These are just the top 5 that I remember seeing.

My top 5 in no particular order

1. Joe Montana- You can talk all you want about the great players he had and the system. He still had to get them the ball.

2. John Elway- When he got the ball to close out a game it was usually automatic

3.Dan Marino- The yardage and TDs he put up were unreal. He had a magic arm.

4. Terry Bradshaw- Same reasoning as Montana. I hated this guy when he played. He beat every team I liked, but I can appreciate him now.

5. Jim Kelly- 4 straight superbowls. Nobody else has come close to doing that. If a few things out of his control happened he would have the ring.

Some honorable mentions
Troy Aikman
Roger Staubach
Brett Favre
Dan Fouts- I am suprised nobody mentioned him. He is 1 of 3 from my childhood that stands out.
Peyton Manning- I reserve the right to add him later. I went with people that had full careers
Tom Brady- See Manning

That is all I can think of for now. I feel that I am missing a couple, but am drawing a blank.

Kelly is a bold move...I like it...Fouts was the pre-Marino Marino...I'd take Roger the Dodger over either of them as a guy who can win...as a pure passer few are in Marino's company, and Fouts is in his shadow...

Re: 5 Best NFL Quarterbacks over the last 30 years.

P.Manning. of course, with or without "the ring".
Favre the tuffest, ironman QB ever. (although I think he should retire soon.)
Montanna, Tarkenten (I'm fudging a little bit here as '75 was his best year) and Elway complete the list.

I am sure that Peyton Manning shall win himself a SuperBowl ring.

I've been a fan of Mannings long enough to come to terms with the fact that he just might never get a Soper Bowl Ring. He may be destined to be remembered as the Greatest QB of all time to never win a Super Bowl.

If/when he ever does get a ring, you can bet there won't be no shutting me up.

Imagine if Eli won a Super Bowl before Peyton? That'd make me throw myself down a flight of stairs.

Not a bad list...but not in order...no way I would give the top slot to Bradshaw...the 1st two Super Bowls belong to the Defense and the guy got benched for the likes of Joe Gilliam...Joe Gilliam!...give me a break...

Re: 5 Best NFL Quarterbacks over the last 30 years.

Joe Montana - Cool as ice, controlled ferocity and the game's most techincally correct quaterback, due in great part to Bill Walsh's coaching. Any quarterback who is cool enough to comment on all the red shirts in the stadium before calling a crucial play in the huddle in the Superbowl is special.

Roger Staubach - Epitomy of leadership and inspiring a sense of never say die in his players. Smart and intuitive and could read a defense and adapt better than any other quarterback in recent memory other than, perhaps Peyton Manning.

Tom Brady - Technically superb, strong leadership and cool under fire. To me, one of the most likeable players the NFL has ever seen. One of the smartest QB's of all time.

Dan Fouts - Great arm, a fighter and a leader. A shame he didn't have enough support to win the big one. I have no doubt he would have.

Joe Kapp (Vikings). Just because he knocked defensive players down with elbow shots. The guy was a big clumsy ox but I loved his guts. Can you imagine the ref's calling roughing the passer in his day? He would have laughed.

Honorable mentions to: Elway, Namath, Bradshaw, Tarkenton, Griese, Unitas, Marino, Earl Morrell and Ron Jaworski (need at least one Polish guy). Now I have to put up with their calls and emails to me protesting that I did not list them in my top five. Just my opinion guys. Lighten up!
