Why do people buy Madden every year?

First, i did not post this to get flamed, so don't do it.
Second, please read this whole post, as it illustrates my point.

It is the time of year yet again that time of year again. People wait outside of stores at Midnight just to get in. The doors finally open, and you get the game you buy every year, the game even non-gamers get excited for. You get home at 1 a.m. pop the disk in your system, and get ready to play some football. That's right, i'm talking about Madden, EA's wildly popular football game.

Now, before you start on me, I like football. That's right, I actually enjoy it. But yet, I only own 1 Madden game. Madden '06. And I purchased it for a mere 6 bucks at Gamestop, 1 year after it came out. I play it sometimes, granted I haven't for a long time as I'm sure some of you will bring up. However, I don't see the need to buy the new game every year. This is not b/c of excellent self control, just because I notice that Madden '90 through Madden '09 are all football games. They are virtually the same for me. I will only ever buy another football game for the 360 if I am bored and want something for a few bucks to keep me entertained. Now, the jump in quality between the Last Gen games and the Current Gen games are signifigant, but what about all of those in between?

I want to know why you buy Madden each and every year on day 1. Tell me why it is worth it. Also, tell me why you don't just wait a year for '09 to be 10 bucks and pick it up then.

Thank you for any and all constructive responses.

Re: Why do people buy Madden every year?

Hi, bobfatty, and welcome to GoTeamsGo!

Actually, I'm with you on this one. I enjoy Madden, but I'm still playing 2007 on the Wii, and I'm just on season #2 with my created player. I skipped 2008, might get 2009 but I'm not sure yet. There's no way I play enough these days to exhaust a version of Madden in a single year.

So why do people buy Madden every year? Could be a status thing. Could be that those small changes are enough to justify $50-60 out of the box. One related thing I'd like to know is... who goes to those midnight openings on Monday night? I mean, it's not like there's going to be a shortage of Madden games out there, right? So get a good night's sleep, get up in the morning and get your copy on Tuesday or Wednesday!

Welcome to GTG bobfatty.
Why do people buy Madden? Good question. I'm not a gamer so wouldnt take it if it was given to me unless I passed it on to my grandkids.
I think Lefty is right about status is part of it. People stand in ridiculous lines to buy the latest craze in anything.
Some are addicted to it. They just gotta have it.
I love football but I can get all I want in other places.
Still a good question. I'd like to see some of people's reasons too.

By the way, we dont allow flaming on here. If anyone tries, they will get shot down by one of the mods, ok?

Re: Why do people buy Madden every year?

1) Updated rosters
2) Updated stats for players
3) Updated graphics (more noticeable from '08 to '09 than some of the others)
4) Online gaming.(most of the good players are going to have the newest version. In order to play them you have to have it too)
5) Updated features (Hit Stick 2.0 is an example)

I'm sure there's more but these are the reasons I have ESPN NFL 2K5, Madden '06, Madden '07, and Madden '08 (VY on the cover). I don't have Madden '09 yet though. I've seen clips of the differences and they are worth it.

exactly why I buy it, mostly for new rosters. If your team gets a really good player, you want to use them in the game. I was going to stand outside to get it, but forgot . Im far from a gamer, madden is the only game I play actually. 09 and 08 are way different in game play, you can tell. It was worth the money. I like 09 a lot more

I get the new rosters, but you can simply trade players and make players to put them on the right team. Not to mention the fact that there are usuall tons of roster moves made after the game comes out, for instance the coverboy of this years game. Anyway, I usually buy the new one every other year rather than every year.

Easier said than done... Real world trades don't always work in the Madden world

EA has it where you can download a new cover for the case with Favre in a Jets uniform.

Also, roster updates are available online throughout the year (usually 3 updates a year). This includes injuries too. The updates also include stat updates for players who are overachieving. They don't update the previous year's rosters after December though.

You cant use it online though, you have to use original rosters.

I've always played Madden on PS2. I'm curious how it plays on the wii? Do you play with a regular controller or with the wand thing?? There's so many plays made with complicated combinations of buttons, seems like it would be difficult.

Well, not sure how familiar you are with the Wii, but there's a control stick that can plug into the back of the remote. Now my created player's a running back so I only have experience with moves related to that position, but you move with that stick, and speed burst is mapped to a button. For a stiff arm, you either thrust with the remote or the "nunchuck" stick attachment, which also has motion sensing capabilities. For a power-running move, you thrust both forward, like you're initiating contact with someone. For pass receptions, you actually need to make a catching motion with your hands while holding both controllers. I understand you throw using the remote as well, but I've yet to test it out. I love it, personally. I always play standing up, and IMO, it beats the pants off of traditional football games, even though the graphics aren't as good.

Was gonna get NCAA 2009 for the Wii, but I hear they dropped the ball on it, big time.

Saw the Madden 09 trailer on Youtube. Looks so good! I kind of want to get it for the PS3.
