New rules and changes

Ok, just a review of the new rules and changes:

On force outs, receiver must have both feet in bounds before going out.
Helmet radios for defense approved.
The incidental five yard face mask penalty has been eliminated. It must be intentional and will result in a 15 yard penalty.
Field goals will be review able.
Winner of the coin toss can defer just as in college
Seeding for playoffs has been tabled
Hair length issue has been tabled

I think thats it. Does anyone know of anything else?

Re: New rules and changes

Does anyone know what year they started the force out rule where it was the referee's decision if he would come in bounds or not?

Not sure I understand this. So if I force you out in a manner that prevents you from getting both feet down ... it's OK ???What is the point of even having the penalty ? The defender is now going to be looking to get you while you are airborne. Will that make it an incomplete pass ?? I have way to many questions about this rule.

Sorry, I didnt word that well at all did I? Forceouts are eliminated. Receiver has to get both feet down or its not complete.
This rule helps the defense.

And reduce a lot of game winning drives in the final minutes.

Was there any reason given for this particular change ??? I realize that it is the refs call here but with the review the coach can try to make his argument that the receiver would have landed inbounds had he not been forced out. Dunno if I like this change.

I was thinking about that myself. I was thinking that it hasnt been around all that long but so far havent been able to find when it was started.

Other rules are a direct snap from center hits the ground before touched by the quarterback which once a false start is a fumble
Legal forward hand off that is dropped is fumble instead of incomplete pass

Re: New rules and changes

Hmm, no more judgment call forceouts, reviewable field goals, and no more incidental facemasks. I like it. Finally they're making some good changes to the game, and giving some power back to the defense. Deferring to the second half works well in college, so it'll be interesting to see it in the NFL. On the whole, I like that they've focused on the defensive side of the game, making changes to benefit those players.

Judgment calls suck LSC. Its straightforward, feet down and in before going out, period. Receivers could use the sidelines before and take advantage of the fact it would probably be a forceout. They have to earn it for real this way. The defense has been getting too many slaps in the face lately. Finally, a rule that is on their side.

All good rules, especially the forceout rule.

Re: New rules and changes

I do like the changes benefitting the defense. That will make these teams play both sides of the ball!

Good deal. Taking the judgement out of the refs hands can only help the game.

i sorta like the force out rule but i don't like the idea a guy can make a great catch and just because he is pushed out of bounds in mid air before he hits the floor he cant have the catch.
its about time the defense got radio's in their helmets
i like the face mask rule because its hard for defensive players to avoid touching the face mask so its a little unfair to give them a penalty for brushing it when they would get 10 yards more for pulling it
field goal review is good but i think we would see maybe one a year
coin toss is good, don't see any issues with that
the playoff seeding is a good thing especially when you look at the issue with the Jags this season (where they had a better record than the Chargers but were seeded lower because they didn't win the division)
and hair length is a good safety issue i suppose

I do agree that it is a good thing to take the decision out of the refs hands. Maybe it'll make the offense play on the field now instead of down the sidelines hoping for a call.

It balances the scales. The wideouts have been able to walk all over the DBs lately. This will give the corners another weapon in their arsenal, the ability to play inside on a guy near the sidelines and use the forceout to their advantage. Hopefully this will allow for a little more physicality in the secondary.

yeah i see your point there...im just thinking that with 10 seconds to go, on fourth down and we are losing, the last thing i wanna see is one of my recievers catching the ball 3 feet from the sideline in the endzone and then being pushed 5 feet off the field and thus not being able to be ruled down...but i see your point about allowing DB's more space to work because they do get a lot of restrictions.
