Unfair advantages?

When you take into account that Washington state does not have a state income tax, Trufant's deal is actually pretty close to the deals given to Nate Clements and now DeAngelo Hall because California's state income tax is 9.8 percent. Back in the mid-90s, Juwan Howard went to the Miami Heat for $98 million. The NBA voided the contract, saying there was improper contact, but the Bullets had to give Howard a $105 million contract because Florida, like Washington, has no state income tax.

Does Seattle or any other team have an unfair advantage? We have the same salary cap number as every other team in the NFL, but can sign players to lower contracts, because the players will not have to pay state income tax.

I know I always look at it in salary negotiations...but players have a lot more money than I do, and can live where every they want to.

Re: Unfair advantages?

I don't think it's unfair. Every team has different things they can pitch about their locales -- be it entertainment options, weather, or in this case, tax breaks. It all depends on what's most important to the individual player.

I wasnt sure about this one, but yeah, you're right. That's it exactly.

And that also explains why Pacman wants to go to Dallas. Land of the strip clubs. He's going to take less money for whats most important to him.

Interesting. Did not know that. All the more reason why the Cowboys should steer clear of him.

Re: Unfair advantages?

Just because one state has no income tax, doesn't mean they don't make it up in real estate tax, sales tax, gas tax, and, the ever popular motor vehicle registration fee.

Hmm... yeah, good point. I guess those "tax breaks" could always be made up elsewhere. Still, it's a good sales pitch.

Re: Unfair advantages?

I don't think all these players get all their money in weekly or monthly checks. Their managers have ways to divert their earned salaries (money) into tax shelters and structure their income to minimize the tax burden.

I am not sure that is part of the manager's job. Does anyone know for sure?
But you are right that it can be diverted into tax shelters so they dont get hit with a big tax bill.

they get paid each game. so when (team name here) gets beat by 4 td's, they wont feel to bad once they get that 30,000 dollar check, just like the one they got last week and the one they will get next week.

but seriously. due to the recent hate towards the tarheels, would'nt this only be considered an advantage if they won 3 superbowls or 4 of the last 7 or something outrageous like that?
