NFL warns Super Bowl players not to do KFC Chicken Dance

KFC Corp. said it would make a charitable donation of $260,000 to "Colonel's Scholars" in the name of the first player or entertainment performer who does the wing-flapping part of the wedding perennial "chicken dance" for three seconds in the end zone. The news did not particularly amuse the National Football League or its teams when they learned of the stunt. "We don't think much of it," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said late last week. "It's ambush marketing, trying to affiliate yourself with the biggest sporting event." According to people close to the matter, the NFL has warned players they could be fined if they do the dance, and Mr. Maynard said no players have contacted KFC -- which isn't a sponsor for the league or the teams -- about the promotion as of Jan. 29. The $260,000 donation figure was determined after carving out three seconds of a 30-second spot, which costs companies an average $2.67 million to buy on Fox's telecast this year. -- Ad Age

Man, the heck with what the NFL says. It's for charity. They're just ticked off that the money's going to a good cause instead of in their pockets.

The NFL forgets that the fan pays their bills...one badly attended Super Bowl and they will be scratching their heads trying to figure what they did wrong...

3 second celebration and a charity gets $267K...now how can they give that a negative spin? Hope it back fires on them.

I love the chicken dance. I hope they do it.
Probably wont because they are afraid of good old Roger, head of the No Fun League.

Never has that name been more appropriate than under Goodell's reign.

With tickets selling for a minimum of over $3K it seems like poor attendance isn't a real concern just yet.

I hope they do it, and that the NFL is smart enough to let em. I'm not a big fan of the "look at me" celebration, but for charity, I'm more the fine with it.

Dance dance dance!

I think it takes away from the game. But I have always felt that way. I don't think the best really need to show up thier opponenet. If it really just about being happy, then celebrate with your team.

But pretty much all the celebrations today are about the player getting on the highlight reel, or just being jerks.

The KFC dance should be fine, any others, throw the flag.

But Phils, these multi-millionaires who think they are hot stuff, go out and make total fools of themselves ahead of millions of people. What's not to love?
