| 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away It was 20 years ago today that CBS fired NFL analyst Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder for these comments: YouTube - Jimmy the Greek Jimmy The Greek was something of a precursor to Don Imus, but I think the fundamental distinction is that Imus knew he was saying something offensive and went ahead and didn't care. Snyder was so clueless that I don't think it ever crossed his mind that he was saying anything offensive. Hence the way he said in the above clip, "I'm not being derogatory about it." 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away - FanHouse - AOL Sports Blog |

| Re: 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away pretty sad that this still goes on. as much high-fivin as we see on tv between black and white players, it pretty much stays on teh field. there is probably a few guys who genuinely dont care what color you are (manning, brady, rivers,lt,big ben, favre, eli, dallas clark, brees, grossman, romo) but alotta guys are only happy as long as those "colords" run fast and jump high and catch td's. |

| Re: 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away i dont remember sir charles sayin anything like that but i know he said some contraversial stuff, he my second favorite b-baller of all time behind mj. and bill walton is too much of a hippy to hate anyone. i see wat you are saying but at teh same time white people can get away with more. if sylvester croom even thought about doin half the stuff bob knight did/does he would be crucified. but bob knight is somehow still employed cuz he wins games. during teh late 90's when the steriod era was in its prime, barry bonds name was simmply mentioned, and people instantly though "he did it he did it". but roger clemens name is mentioned and it takes almost a month for anyone to man up and say "he probably did cheat" take a guy like ty cobb, a -for lack of a better word-a-hole, and a guy who was openly and EXTREMELY RACIST but was still kept on teams and eventually made it into the hall of fame cuz he was a good player and his flaws were overlooked. yet a guy like latrell sprewell is basically exiled cuz of an altercation with his coach. now imagine if it was tony dungy or lovie smith in spy-gate and not bill bellichick Last edited by Lefty Noob : 01-18-2008 at 05:32 AM. | Re: 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away Golf Weekly has a noose on its cover in relation to the Kelly Tilghman controversy. It is going to be absolutely lambasted. However, in my own small town of Plainfield, Ct, at the Town Hall no less, a black family and their lawyers and "advisers" managed to hang a noose up to protest their perceived lack of action by the police force in solving who beat up their son as he was waiting for the bus. What this all means, I don't know.

That's really the point with Cobb...he would not have gotten away with it in this era...but in the era he played, there was a Negro League and segregation...so it was accepted by and large by a lot of his peers and the country in general. My issue with Cobb then is that he slid under the "charcter" clause of HOF, while a guy like Shoeless Joe Jackson is left out in the cold over it.

| Re: 20 Years Ago Today, Jimmy the Greek Threw His Career Away thats part of my point too. HOF voters say people dont only get in cuz of their ahtletic accopmlishments but also cuz of their character in order to protect the "integrity" of the game of baseball. wat integrity? the integrity of the sport that banned non-white players? the sport that more juiced up than tropicana? but i guess it depends on where you live that influencec how people feel about stuff like this. i live in south carolina. the civil war started here. even though that was almost 150 years ago , the deep south in 2008 still isnt exactly a racial melting pot. omstly white kiids still go to private schools and mostly black kids still go to public schools. i played sports all my life and when you play sports you gotta be around all different races all the time and i's still suprised at some of the things i hear about people views on race. i cant even begin to tell you how many silly statements i've heard that started with "ALL black peple" or "ALL white people"........... |
