NFL could dump force-out rule on receptions

When the NFL competition committee gets together in the offseason to discuss possible rules changes, there is expected to be considerable conversation about deep-sixing the force-out rule on receptions. Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who is co-chairman of the committee along with Falcons GM Rich McKay said his group has come close to recommending doing away with the force-out rule twice in the last 3 years. "It's really the only part of the game where you're asking somebody that's trying to be objective throughout the game to make a subjective call on whether there was contact enough to get the receiver out of bounds," Fisher said. "The downside, if you eliminate it from the game, depending on what your perspective is, is that you're going to reward the defensive player for a good [offensive] play." -- Philadelphia Daily News

Good. They don't call it enough as is, so best to cut out the guess work and just let the DBs have the sidelines.

Right. As it is right now, if the DB forces the WR out of bounds before he gets both feet in bounds, the refs are supposed to make a judgment call about whether or not the WR would've gotten both feet in bounds if not for the DB's interference. Yet the hardly ever rules in favor of the wideout. So I say, why not just go ahead and dump the rule - that way at least, the wideouts know what they're up against going in.

Re: NFL could dump force-out rule on receptions

yea it never goes in favor of the wr except in that new england v. indianapolis game earlier this year. and donte stall worth got a force out. BS. they should stop complainin about reviewin certian plays since big games somehow are always decided on a sketchy play. why jeoprardize the True outcome of a game jus cuz you dont wanna step aside for 2 minutes and look in a little booth to get somethin right. it looked like kellin winslow jr. was gonna land in bounds . all they should do is look at instant replay and see where his feet are positioned to come down before he is hit by teh db(s)

Re: NFL could dump force-out rule on receptions

Exactly - that Winslow call was the one that immediately comes to mind. If that play wasn't considered a force out, I don't know what can be. He clearly would've been in bounds if not for the two defenders who made contract with him in midair. So I figure if they're not going to call it anyway, they might as well not bother with the rule at all. At least then the receivers know what they're up against.

Re: NFL could dump force-out rule on receptions

I don't know that kind of takes away the sideline catch for the receiver and that could hurt especially in 2:00 drills at the end of the game. Frankly I think they should keep it.
