Culpepper to CFL?

Culpepper on Bombers' negotiation list

Daunte Culpepper

TSN.ca Staff

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added quarterback Daunte Culpepper to their negotiation list, according to local reports.
The news comes just days after his current team - the Miami Dolphins - acquired quarterback Tren Green from the Kansas City Chiefs and told Culpepper they wanted to trade him.
Culpepper - who is due to make US$5.5 million in the NFL this season - played in only four games a year ago because of knee problems and is still trying to recover from major surgery.
He came off a subpar season in 2005, when he tore three ligaments in his knee during a game against Carolina. In seven games, he threw six touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He burst onto the scene in 2000 in his first year as a starter, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns to help lead the Vikings to the NFC Championship game. But that season was washed away with an embarrassing 41-0 loss to the Giants in the Meadowlands.

if(!sops){if(p.sops){var sops=p.sops;}else{var sops="";}} if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;} if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(!dUnitSuper)||(dUnitBox )){place300x250();}} Culpepper had his finest season in 2004, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes with 39 touchdowns and a 110.9 rating. Only Peyton Manning's record-setting season kept Culpepper from the MVP award.

Re: Culpepper to CFL?

Okay, so I was wrong. It's Winnipeg, not Toronto. Still, I am 99% certain Culpepper will spend a year in the CFL at this point. No NFL team needs a QB bad enough to want to pay his asking price, and no one (well, except the Dolphins themselves) want to add a new face to compete for a starting job. This is one rumor I'm definitely buying into.

Re: Culpepper to CFL?

the chances of him going to the CFL according to the Bombers GM are slim to none but I figure I'd throw it out there.

Re: Culpepper to CFL?

To tell you the truth I haven't seen alot of him in the NFL. But being a big quarterback won't do him anyting in the CFL. You just got to be quick and be able to scramble. In the right system he would probable do very well.

Unhappy Re: Culpepper to CFL?

Oh, no, please say it aint so!

The only positive thing about this to me could be that he could prove he is healthy and still play and thus would be able to get back to the NFL. He most certainly can scramble.

That's a good point. Aint Oakland gonna get a tackling dummy QB till Russell is ready or they gonna toss him right in? Still Culpepper going to Canada would be a break for the Fish in terms of cap room and less distractions for Green and NFL fans from having to watch him play.

Well, they say McCown's looking really sharp. I guess maybe we should take that with a grain of salt, but I've always thought the kid had potential to be a good NFL quarterback. The bottom line is they're not going to sign Culpepper. I'm not even sure they have the cap room to make it work.

Re: Culpepper to CFL?

This may be the only way to go at this point. I don't think anybody is going to risk signing him even to a small contract. He can prove that his knees are healthy. Even if he is at 80%, he should still be able to play well in the CFL.

C-Pep's knees are shot! I mean he couldn't put any mustard on those throws last year by stepping into them. As a result he was dreadfully ineffective and was usurped by a bust like Harrington. Perhaps in the CFL the competition will be less and he can make a living because he doesn't have what it takes to be a good NFL QB in my view.
