Re: New Football League Starting

ok, here is another reason why this league has a chance ....... some of you seem to think their talent will be extremely watered down because the let the NFL pick 1st in the draft ......... well that doesnt always mean a lot

http://www.goteamsgo.com/forum/footb...rst-round.html

and how about guys like Tom Brady and Joe Montana ?

Yeah, what about them? There is only one each of them. If they go to the new league, then what's left for the NFL? Ryan Leaf? Talent at that level is thin. It doesnt make any diff who gets first pick. There's not enough to go around for BOTH leagues.

well yes this is true, but i think the point he was tryign to make is that there is talent to be found in later rounds of the draft. you never know how someone is gonna play till you give them a chance. joe and tom are just good examples of that.

Re: New Football League Starting

I would like to see it happen. The talent may even out if the lower round players are given a chance to start every play. They ride the bench most of teh time now because the higher draft picks get more money. They can't be benched for another player.

What I really see happening is it will end up being a minor league system for the NFL. As soon as somebody starts playing well, they will start to get noticed by the big clubs.

How will this affect the NFLs expansion plans? What will happen if they both try to get a city?

Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street businessman, is starting the UFL. According to the report, he and his partner, Tim Armstrong, a senior executive at Google, have pledged $2 million each.

The Times/Play report says the league is still in the planning stages. Billionaire Boone Pickens backed out of his plan to buy a team, but Play says Cuban remains committed. Plans are for the league to have its first first preseason games in August 2008

Hambrecht’s plan is to enter big cities where the NFL isn’t, according to Play. As Cuban wrote in an e-mail, “There are quite a few good-sized non-N.F.L. cities that can support a pro team.” According to Play, the UFL has decided to put teams in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mexico City. (Cuban is considering taking the Las Vegas franchise.) Each owner will put up $30 million, giving him an initial half-interest in the team; the league will own the other half. Eventually each team is going to sell shares to the public, according to Play. Then the owner, the league and the fans will each own a third of every franchise.

One television advantage the UFL will have is Friday night. Thanks to the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act, the NFL. is prohibited from televising games on most autumn Friday nights. Any new league would have televised football all to itself on that evening, the Play story says.

Roger Noll, a sports economist at Stanford University, told Play, “The crucial barrier to entry is finding stadiums in the biggest cities,” he replied — something UFL executives insist is not a problem in the places they are considering. “If you can do that, it would be easy to have a league.”

Couldn't find a bigger joke, challenging the NFL is like appealing a Nascar decision!

Someone will always be out there trying, though, always looking to reach that fan who's put off but the product the NFL puts on the field today, with the QB protection rules and the strict pass interference rules. I know there's a large contingent of fans who'd just like to see guys go out there and play, and really smack the tar out of each other like in the old days. The issue is, though, are there enough quality players to support such a league? I say no.

Hmm, I am wondering if today's high priced players would want to go out there and smack the tar out of each other?

Re: New Football League Starting

I think it could work as long as it does not try to compete as the same days as the NFL. I'm all for more football. I love the sport. I would watch it everyday if it was on.

I agree, initially if the new league attracts more attention than the XFL's dismal effort, good secondary talent could leave the NFL for a chance to have the spotlight on them. However, the NFL has been around for a longtime and crushing new league's has also been apart of their resume. If it gets to the point where the new league has the ability to compete with the NFL, then they will buy it. The only good I see coming from this is the chance for some cities to have a football team. If after they buy it the NFL sees that these teams can be supported by the cities they're in, then they will keep them around. I think that the people that are investing in the new league have had this in the back of their minds from the start and they stand to make a lot of money if it all pans out.
