this is a simple question, are players in the NFL now-a-days on to much money? i mean its frustarting me in this time of free agency to hear about players going from one franchise to another for a bigger pay cheque in the same time where a great player like Marshall Faulk is hanging up his cleats and yet he portrays the ideals of a true football player, playing simply for the love of the game.

i recently read an article about how Pacman Jones's house was burglarized and they stole over $170,000 worth of jewelry! thats right, among tv sets and music systems and all the rest he has $170,000 worth of jewelry just lying around his home, and he is only a second year player!

now we all love the game of football but are the players on too much money for doing a job that doesnt really merit that extermely large pay cheque at the end of the day?

I voted no, because someone has to write the check. By that I mean the owners started the spending spree's, and any fool would take that kind of cash!! Do I wish I could make that kind of money?? Oh yeah. However, it is what it is. It's crazy how it got so out of control, ut the cat is out of the bag.

The honest answer is, yes, they make too much. But I would take that money to do my job in a heartbeat. And it just seems silly to vote yes, since we can't get that cat back in the bag!

I totally agree. Is it out of control? Yes, but the players should be able to make what the market drives. If you want to blame someone, blame the owners who are paying it, not the players.

Small price to pay for a shorten lifespan, and aches and pains every Monday morning...not to mention 70K fans on Sunday that think that because they played Pop Warner, they could do better.

yeah i see what your saying but im not suggesting that if someone offered me that much money to play i wouldnt take it becuase no one would say no to that, all im saying is that do they need to get multi million dollar a year contracts, couldnt they survive on a couple of million?

Why?

These guys on the average have a 5 year career...why would they not want to leverage that into financial indpendence? I would...most people would...after that if you want to give 90% of it to a charity or so forth...more power to you...

Why woldn't they want to set themselves up for the rest of their lives. Maybe even take care of their grandchildren's futures. If the owners are paying that much, I say take it.

No, not at all. I mean does a guy like Matt Schaub make too much? Absolutely. But the majority of players don't make huge salaries and then they are crippled for the rest of their lives.

In relation to police officers, fire fighters and public school teachers, HELL YEAH.

But not in relation to pro sports. If anything, MLB and NBA players get paid just as highly if not more. And at their contracts are guaranteed. The NFL is all about those signing bonuses.

And as long as the NFL is a money making machine, the players will continue to get paid highly.

ok Empire you see to be getting what point im trying to make, im not comparing the NFL players to other sports but in relation to working people, what makes them better than the average guy that they go from nothing to multi million dollar contracts?

A lot of good points on this thread. Yeah, its too much money but so dont a lot of other people get paid too much. Its not the players' fault, I would take if it was offered to me too.
Downside is, it seems to spoil a lot of good men.

i think one thing here is missing and it needs to be said

are the NFL players salaries high ?........yes of course they are

and who is to blame ?......the owners ?.......nope

we are........thats right...the fans

they build $500 million stadiums + or - a few mill.........and who pays for it.......we do.........of course you could say big corporations do like Gillette but where do they get the money ?........from us when we pay $10 for a $2 razor

then the NFL gets huge money from cable.......also our fault when we pay $50 a month for basic cable

we spend the money on the NFL and the companies that support the NFL.......so, in the end i blame us

$120 or so for a pair of sneakers.....

dont blame the players when you pay for that NFL Ticket or the NFL Network or whatever else lines there pockets

Well, for what it's worth, I prefer college football to pro, and my favorite baseball team is actually a Frontier League club (I like the Pirates, but they're #2 to the Washington Wild Things). So I'm doing my part in keeping athlete salaries down!
