Most Overrated QB in the NFL?

Who's the most overrated QB in the NFL? If I had to pick one, I'd say Eli Manning. I'm not saying he's not talented or skilled. But, for a guy that barely completes 50% of his passes, he sure has a lot of hype. Especially when he has a guy running the ball for 1800+ yards and a 5.2 yard average.

Anyone agree or disagree? Who's overrated?

Well, I guess its kind of a trendy pick these days, but I'd have to say Michael Vick. There may not be a better pure athlete in the league than Vick, but as a passer and a field general, I think he has yet to live up to the hype. Even if you dismiss the 75.8 career passer rating and the 51-39 career TD to INT ratio, look at how hard its been for him to get a grasp for any NFL offense. He may yet become a true great in this game, but for all he does and all the attention he gets, I really have to believe that Vick is the most overrated.

I can understand the arguments for both guys. But Eli still has a ceiling like none other and I would hope he has not played his best football, because, your right, he gets a surplus of publicity for what he has actually produced. Vivk is a trendy pick for the "overrated" moniker, but he has digressed since his first full season and I think a majority of that blame is on Jim Mora Jr. who insists on forcing the west coast offense nonsense. A coach has to cater to his players strengths, and Vick, as the centerpiece for that offense, specializes in throwing deep and running the ball. Why does Jim Mora Jr. insist on hinering both of those qualities?
I would suggest Byron (or is it Bryan?) Leftwich. Who seemingly cannot win any games for his team. At least not any worth a damn. And I hate to fault a guy for being injury prone, but if you are a Jags fan are you really confident in him leading your team to a Superbowl? I have been to Jacksonville several times as I have friends that live down there, the general populace apparently does. Its the worst case of stockholm syndrome I have seen in quite some time.

Cool Jake The Snake

Totally agree with Mid Depth on Manning. He has big time accuracy problems.

I agree with cjg that Mora is killing Vick by not letting him do his thing by trying to make him a pocket passer, which he's not.

My vote goes to Jake Plummer. I don't care what his numbers were this year. He can't throw from the pocket - and he never could. He's sort of like a poor man's Vick. He needs to be moving to be effective.

We saw what happened against Pitt in the playoffs when Plummer was FORCED to throw. It was pretty ugly.

Michael Vick

My vote goes for Vick. Sure, the guy can run, but that seems to be about it. He has never impressed me in a game in which I've seen him play. He has nothing near the electricity in a game that Peyton Manning has or that Brett Farve had during his peak years. One can't be considered among the greats if they don't create that spark.

Definitely Ben Rothlesburgergerboy with Vick second. Plummer and Eli don't get half the hype that Vick or Ben does. In Plummer's case, people have to actually regard you as a top QB before you can be overrated. In Eli's case, his upside is mammoth and this was only his first full year in the league.

Never has a QB been the byproduct of a great team like Burger Boy has. The fact that you can win a Super Bowl with a 22 passer rating speaks volumes about the team the Steelers had. A great running game and defense will do wonders for a QB. Just look at the Bears. They got in the playoffs with one of the worst QB's in all of football.

As has been stated, Vick is the premier athlete at the position, but I'm still waiting for him to develop a passing game.

xdavid,

Did you see Ben's playoff performance? The guy was spectacular. He's a 23 year old playing on a good team but you don't win as many games as he has without having some talent. Vick is over-hyped for sure.

You have to give Ben 5 years to evaluate his career. He was playing in the biggest football game known to makind at the age of 23. Dan Marino was the only other quarterback that I know that was in the Super Bowl at age 23. He's hard for a lot of folks to evaluate because he is on a balanced team but Ben rarely makes mistakes. He has had an outstanding passer rating for such a young career. He got the Steelers to the SuperBowl.
They would have never been there with out his stellar last half of the season and playoff run.

I did. I'm not saying the guy is a spare by any stretch. In the end I think we'll see him on par with most of the journeyman QB's in the league.

Xdavid,

Only time will tell. You are right about balance. Defense and a running game will always give you a chance. Dan Marino never had that kind of team around him.

Re: Most Overrated QB in the NFL?

Daunte Culpepper is by far the most overrated QB, he's been on paid vacation for most of this season, and now the Vikings will probably settle for a second rounder for the 1 time MVP.

Re: Most Overrated QB in the NFL?

Welcome to GoTeamsGo, jasonk005.

Seems like it was forever ago but at one time I really thought the Vikings were gonna do something last year. You think next season is already a lost cause or can they get over all the crap that's gone down?

Perhaps, Dave, but could you see that team winning that game with either Charlie Batch or Tommy Maddox at quarterback?

On any given Sunday? No. The Super Bowl? Possibly. It's no secret Seattle lost to themselves.

It's hard to call a quarterback overrated when he is fresh off a Super Bowl win. Plus his win/loss record is off the charts for a quaterback who is in his second season.

Cool Re: Most Overrated QB in the NFL?

Welcome to the Board Jason K.

I don't see how anybody can say Roethlisberger is overrated. The Steelers are like 26-3 when he starts. Those numbers are STAGGERING. He has won a Super Bowl to boot.

Neil O' Donnell he's not.
