Automatic Numbers for the Hall of Fame...

Okay, Baseball has its 500 homer...its 3,000 hits and 300 wins are sure numbers to lock into the Hall of Fame...

What about Football?...What's a lock in Football?

At one point I would have said 10,000 yards rushing...or 100 lifetime TDs for non QBs etc...

but have the times passed these numbers up?

Re: Automatic Numbers for the Hall of Fame...

i'd probably say like

passing:
30-40,000 yds
300 tds

rushing: 10,000 yds
recieving: 10,000 yds

100 tds for both rushing and recieving

See... would have said the 10K mark...but too many backs and receivers these days hit that...that would put Irving Fryer and Ricky Waters into the Hall...not to mention Ottis Anderson...

Good players to be sure...but Hall Worthy?

Cool Re: Automatic Numbers for the Hall of Fame...

Welcome to GoTeamsGo Sports Convo...I don't believe numbers should ever be an automatic in any sport. The numbers have to be taken in context with too many things. Some guys are great compilers of numbers but I wouldn't consider them GREAT players so they're not HOF worthy in my opinion. Take Art Monk for example. He was a very good player but I never considered him great. So I don't think he belongs in the Hall but based on the numbers only, he would get in.

Ah, but now you are making it too subjective..."I would not consider them GREAT"...does not a standard make.

But see, Gotham, that's the thing about the Hall of Fame. You can't say we'll let anyone with 10,000 yards rushing or X amount of passing touchdowns in. Because that's not what the Hall of Fame is about. You know a Hall of Famer when you see him, at least, that's what I think. Consistency, coming through the clutch, making the impossible play look easy and doing it time and again, taking his team on his back and carrying them into the playoffs. Being "the man." That's what a Hall of Famer does. The stats? Well, they're the icing, not the cake. Using statistics as the foundation of a Hall of Fame player is like trying to explain through sheet music what makes a Beatles song so good. Just can't be done.

Re: Automatic Numbers for the Hall of Fame...

GDK is just trying to be difficult

he wouldnt just go by the numbers either

case in point Drew Bledsoe

after this season, if he stays in and healthy, he should resonably have over 46,000 yards and 260 touchdowns

by what ive seen here that should carry serious Hall consideration, if you just go by the numbers

but, as we all know, GDK would never vote for Drew

While I am difficult on my best of days...I would consider Mr. Bledsoe...Good numbers, lead his team the Super Bowl...long career...and a Dallas Cowboy...also an elite for the first part of the 1990's...

Though if Simple Simon reached Lefty Noobs type numbers on this board I still would deny him entry into the poster Hall of Fame...

Re: Automatic Numbers for the Hall of Fame...

If you were a good football player, you deserve a spot in the Hall.

Bledsoe cannot compare to Johnny U or Broadway Joe.

Bledsoe wasn't anything special in his career, except with the Patriots in the early 2000s. Then, Brady stepped in.

Bledsoes numbers run a heck of a lot better than Broadway Joe...master of one Super Bowl moment...not to take anything away from Joe, who was the elite AFL QB of the 60's, but he had some awful numbers once you get passed that 4,007 yard season of his...look it up...

I'd rather just focus on Super Bowl III.

That's the kind of thinking that would land Timmy Smith in the Hall of Fame...
