GREENSBORO, N.C. - This season there was plenty of buzz surrounding the Florida State women's basketball team thanks to its "Sweet 16" run in the NCAA Tournament. Now the Seminoles are being lauded for their efforts in the classroom as three student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Basketball Team as announced by the league office on Thursday (June 28).
Florida State tied Maryland for the most honorees as the Seminoles were represented by senior guard Alicia Gladden (Orange Park, Fla.), sophomore guard Mara Freshour (Nashville, Ind.) and senior center Nikki Anthony (Pickens, S.C.). To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
"Our philosophy with Florida State women's basketball is person first, student second and athlete third," FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. "I think being among the ACC schools with the most All-Academic Team members for women's basketball is a clear indication that this philosophy is working. We've enjoyed great success on the court, our players are very active in the community and I am just proud of what they are also accomplishing in the classroom."
