Fla. State official: Bowden should go after season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said Sunday he isn't planning on quitting anytime soon, but the chair of the university's board of trustees has seen enough of the man who transformed the program into a collegiate powerhouse.

"My hope is frankly that we'll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden era," chairman Jim Smith told the Tallahassee Democrat on Sunday. " ... I do appreciate what he's done for us, what he's done for the program, what he's done really for the state of Florida.

Interviewed by The Associated Press on Monday, Smith said the arrangement with Bowden as head coach and his successor, Jimbo Fisher, as offensive coordinator isn't working.

Fla. State official: Bowden should go after season

Updated: October 5, 2009, 12:26 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The chairman of the Florida State University trustees wants Bobby Bowden to retire at the end of this season.

Jim Smith said Monday the arrangement with Bowden as head coach and his successor, Jimbo Fisher, as offensive coordinator isn't working.
Trustees like Smith don't have immediate authority over coaches, but they hold significant sway. They are the bosses of university president T.K. Wetherell, who does choose coaches.

Smith said fundraising has slowed significantly, and the school has an obligation to fans and alumni to be competitive.
However, he said he doesn't think a decision should be made until the end of the season.
The Seminoles fell to 2-3 Saturday after losing at Boston College.

Personally, after all that Bobby has done for the Seminoles in past years, it would be sad to see him forced out. However, a lot of fans are probably tired of going to subpar bowls.

Anybody else think Bowden should go?

It's going to end up that Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno will die on the sideline or in their office one day. The old farts won't give it up for nothing. The both want the title of most wins. And nothing will stop them.

I think Bowden and Paterno should work out a pact that they both retire when they are tied for the most victories.

Source: FSU won't oust Bowden

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will not be asked to step down this season, a source told ESPN's Shaun King on Tuesday. Bowden's contract runs through the 2010 season.

A succession plan for coach-in-waiting Jimbo Fisher to assume greater responsibility before next season has been discussed, though, according to the source.

If Bowden stays for the 2010 season, the source said, Florida State officials want a plan in place in which Fisher would have control over the Seminoles' football operations -- for example, recruiting, coaching and practice.

Re: Fla. State official: Bowden should go after season

I think that Bobby will use the 2010 season as a "Victory Lap" season, if nothing else. If his win / loss record improves, the old guy will stay put. But if not, the school will keep the guy on retainer on a year to year basis.

And I think that this is the way it should be. Because Bobby and Joe Paterno are locked in this never ending battle to get the most wins before they retire, and or die. Wich ever comes first.

And besides, with the wins that the NCAA stripped away from FSU; I don't think that Bobby is going to climb out of that hole anyway.

Just let the old guy do his thing. He's worked long and hard enough to deserve it. Heck, they named the darn field they play on after him. They can't hate him that much.

Re: Fla. State official: Bowden should go after season

Hey Nascaraddict, I totally agree. I remember when a few years ago the Penn ST Boosters starting getting upset that the Lions were playing really average and the "Get Rid Of Joe" started up. I just remember that Joe Paterno took this very seriously and Penn St the next year won the Big 10 if I remember right?

Bottom line is Bobby Bowden put the Seminoles on the map and did a lot of great things for this university over the years. The guy still loves the game and everybody should let him decide when it is his time to go. Personally, I can see both Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden dying on the football field. They both love the game so much and are a last of a dynasty.

Florida State will not be an elite team again until Bowden steps down. He won't be catching Joe Paterno, especially with the wins that were taken away from him by the NCAA.

With the vacated wins for BBowden, will this be another sports record with an * beside it?

Look ya'll, I've been a fan my entire life, and tell me who built FSU's Reputation? Who made us a force to be dealt with, Bobby Bowden. Now do we really want to pull a potiential Packer's mistake and let him go? I hope to GOD not. That man has had my faith even threw the past 4 or 5 years with our horrible quarterbacks. We finally have one now, and we're going to put so much drama into this guys life by having open conversations about getting rid of his coach? Forget that ya'll, we don't need to screew up another quarterback's mind, haven't we done that enough. Let the man do what he does, he has the players now, he just needs to get more disciple plays out of them. Let him do what he does and he will win, so get off his back.
