Are the Florida Marlins Contenders?

As of now, the Marlins are just 6 games back in the NL Wild Card hunt and reports out of Florida are saying the organization considers themselves buyers as we inch towards the deadline. This is an interesting tidbit because if you ask me, they have as much talent as the Braves, Reds, Giants, Rockies and so forth. They could use some help in the pen and perhaps even a veteran bat somewhere for leadership.

Do you think the Marlins are serious playoff contenders?

Re: Are the Florida Marlins Contenders?

No, I don't. Should they happen to make the playoffs, they will not get past the first round regardless of who they play. They are still lacking in areas, as you mentioned the bullpen and a strong veteran back in the lineup. They need to go out shopping before the deadline in order to have a true shot at making some noise - and they need to do it fast!

IF, the Marlins do make the playoffs, it will be an incredible feat. This team was ruled out before the season even began. Girardi has done a great job with this young team...

Go Marlins!

Cool Re: Are the Florida Marlins Contenders?

I don't think so. The fact that the Marlins are so close tells you all you need to know about the quality of the NL. The only team from the NL that I would put in the top 8 teams in baseball is the Mets...

The Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, White Sox, Twins and the A's are all better than the next best team in the NL - the Cardinals.

Too many teams to jump over for the Marlins.
