Florida Marlins payroll

ESPN is reporting that the Florida Marlins, as it stands now, will have an $8 million payroll next year. In fact, their highest paid player (currently the closer) is scheduled to make less next season than Alex Rodriguez will make every four days. Sickening, ain't it? Should baseball do something about this?

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

WTF?!

That's crazy...but you have to imagine the Marlins will be adding some payroll. If their ultimate payroll heading into the season is less than $15-$20 million, you really have to question ownership, and still you should. MLB should institute a minimium payroll threshold. These franchises get a ton of money from revenue sharing.

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

Well, if that Miller kid they got from Detroit makes the roster, he'll add $1 million. Other than that, it doesn't sound like too many more roster changes are in store for the franchise. I'd be kind of surprised if they get to $10 million, and if they don't, it would be an absolute travesty.

Yes. I've been saying this since the mid 90's - and I'm a Yankee fan. I take no pleasure in the disparity of competition, year after year.

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

The Marlins should be made to sell the team for what they are spending on it. Maybe that would encourage owners to put a team on the field that will contend. I am not saying eveybody should spend Yankee dollars, but they can do better than they are.

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

The angels, red sox, and mariners had a high payroll last year didn't make the playoffs. They meet a couple of years had losing records with a high payroll. While the twins and A's made the playoffs with a small payroll. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of money is just that they have better management. Yet people like the royals owner blame everything on money, it wasn't money it was bad management. What is your opinion?

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

Well you have to have a nice balance. The Rockies for instance did not have a high payroll but they had someone who made big money (Helton). The Marlins sent Cabrera and Willis away because they knew they wouldn't give them the money. What will happen once Hanley Ramirez is able to become a free-agent in a few years, will they trade him before then or pay him?

You don't have to spend like the Yankees and Red Sox, but you do have to sign the people you develop. Right now they are a minor league team for the rest of the league.

Re: Florida Marlins payroll

Yeah, nobody expects them to have a top 10 payroll or anything. Just invest a little in your product, and like azrael said, sign the guys you develop.
