Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors

ESPN's Peter Gammons says according to his sources, the Florida Marlins will shop third baseman Miguel Cabrera this off-season. Rotoworld believes the Marlins thinking is that with so many teams (including Boston and the Yankees) in need of a third baseman, the value is highest now.

However, "The problem is that, with his weight up, Cabrera's defense has gone from mediocre to truly bad, and he'd make more sense as a first baseman right now. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have possibilities there as well, but they might not be willing to surrender as much talent to fill a hole that is easier plugged."

So I wonder just how big the offers for Cabrera may be. Definitely better than any package offered for Willis.

Re: Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors

Ken Rosenthal says it's almost certain Cabrera will be traded this off-season. He says the Anaheim Angels are the favorites at this point.

"The Cabrera talks intensified at the general managers' meetings on Wednesday, with the Angels showing the heaviest interest, according to major-league sources.

The Marlins are insisting that the Angels include second baseman Howie Kendrick, sources say. The Angels almost certainly would prefer to part with less established players. Third baseman Brandon Wood would be a strong possibility, and the Angels also could satisfy the Marlins' needs for a young catcher and young pitching.

The Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees are among the other clubs talking to the Marlins about Cabrera. The Red Sox, however, are trying to re-sign third baseman Mike Lowell and the Yankees' chances of landing Cabrera might diminish after comments by owner George Steinbrenner's son Hank, who said that the team would not trade any of its top three pitching prospects for a position player."

Re: Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors

What does the market for Cabrera do for A-Rod?

I mean, the Angels are the big dog in the Rodriguez sweepstakes... if they get Cabrera, they wouldn't want the ex-Yankee, now, right?

Secretly, I bet Scott Boras has got to be seething over these rumors.

I don't know why they would want to get rid of Cabrera. He has one of the best bats in baseball. They are very close to contending again. They need to keep their best players.

I see this as a long process. Boras will wait until Cabrera goes somewhere to push A-Rod. They will not shell out the big dollars if there is a comparable bat a lot cheaper.

Re: Miguel Cabrera Trade Rumors

Latest rumor is from SI's Jon Heyman. The Angels have reportedly throwing up their hands and left the door open for the Marlins to come back. The Angels latest offer was "Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis, one of two coveted young pitchers -- Nick Adenhart or Ervin Santana -- plus an additional pitcher prospect described as a "mid-level'' talent."

The Marlins want BOTH Adenhart and Santana in the deal and that's when the Angels pulled away.

So we'll see if the Marlins end up accepting the Angels offer or keep Cabrera and hope someone else blows them away.
