| Joiner arrested, charged after early-morning incident GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida safety Tony Joiner was arrested early Tuesday and charged with felony burglary, police said. Joiner, a senior captain who ranks fifth on the ninth-ranked Gators with 20 tackles, was arrested around 5 a.m. outside the fenced impound lot of a towing company, Gainesville police said. Joiner was accused of pushing an electric gate open to enter the lot in an attempt to retrieve his girlfriend's car, which was being held in lieu of a $76 towing bill, a police report said. According to the report, witnesses said Joiner opened the gate to the towing company, got into a car, drove out of the lot and was trying to close the gate when he was confronted by one of the witnesses. The witness said Joiner drove back into the lot and waited for police to arrive. The arresting officer, Robert Concannon, wrote that Joiner was talking on a phone when he walked up. Concannon said he heard Joiner say, "I am probably about to go to jail 'cause I did push the gate open." However, the owner of the property that houses Watson's Towing told Florida Today that Joiner had made arrangements to pick up the car. According to the paper, property owner Stan Forron said Joiner had talked to the lot's dispatcher about picking up the car. The dispatcher had gone to get food and left the gate to the lot open. He claims Joiner was going to pay the bill, but when no one was there, he took the car and was going to pay the bill later. "I don't think [Florida athletes] should be treated any differently, better or worse,'' he told Florida Today. "The towing company just wants their money, not anything else. This kid should not have been arrested for what he did. To me, that's just crazy.'' Lt. Keith Kameg of the Gainesville police told Florida Today: "He did not have permission to enter. When you attempt to move a car that is impounded it's burglary." Forron disagrees. "What he did was wrong,'' Forron said, according to Florida Today. "We're not saying he's an angel and shouldn't pay. But why all of a sudden is he being arrested for something that happened numerous times throughout the years and nobody else has been arrested?'' Florida coach Urban Meyer was aware of Joiner's arrest and planned to address it after practice Tuesday. Joiner's arrest came two days after three players were questioned about a shooting outside a downtown nightclub. The players were not considered suspects, but their names were given to police as people who may have witnessed the shooting that happened several hours after the Gators lost 20-17 to Auburn. | Re: Joiner arrested, charged after early-morning incident What is it going to take for student athletes to get through their head they are resonsible for their actions. I know most of them are young and may have never been away from home and a small misjudgement is not the end of the world but doing something that a 6th grader knows not to do is way out of line.
