Florida star linebacker Brandon Spikes has been suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt after he attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey last week. Gators coach Urban Meyer told reporters today that Spikes was retaliating for getting his eye poked earlier in the game.

The SEC issued a statement saying it has "reviewed and accepted the disciplinary actions" taken by Florida in suspending Spikes for a half. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive declined to comment on the play, which has become widely viewed on the Internet.

Florida was right in taking the lead on disciplining its own player. But half a game? In order words, Spikes is available just in case the Gators
stunningly have trouble against Vanderbilt. Spikes should have sat for at least one game, if for nothing else than to send a stronger message that Florida and the SEC don't accept classless acts.

This hardly sounds like a punishment. What a joke. An Oregon player misses the entire year for punching someone that provoked him, not trying to gouge someone's eyes out. This thug will only miss half a game? I guess that is a reflection of the values and morals at Florida...the new Thug U.

Eye for a Eye that is kind of childish if you ask me you need to man up and be a man. Well you have to consider who he plays for. More and more i loose respect for Urban Meyer. So would you expect any thing more, any other team and it would have been at least one game maybe more. It is a non issue, not important, we condone this type of play, don't really care attitude by Florida.

You finally see the difference in these conferences the Sec wants to win and they are willing to punish the bad players as long as they feal but the good they hoop and hollar to get them back it shows the Pac 10 is a more mature conference then the SEC
