| Race for C-USA title hot East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz is well aware of Conference USA history. No one has repeated as conference champion since the league was reorganized in 2005. The Pirates hope to change the trend, eager to claim another C-USA title to match the one East Carolina won in 2008. East Carolina scored a big offseason victory, with the NCAA granting quarterback Patrick Pinkney a hardship waiver and sixth year of eligibility. His leadership plus a slew of strong returning defensive players give the Pirates a good shot at repeating as league champions. After a strong year for the West division, look for the power to shift back to the East in 2009. UCF, UAB and Southern Miss all have the potential to topple East Carolina and claim spots in the Conference USA championship game.
