Duke introduces Cutcliffe as coach

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- David Cutcliffe molded quarterback after quarterback into Heisman Trophy contenders and prized NFL draft picks.

Now comes an even tougher construction project: Transforming downtrodden Duke into a winner.
The Tennessee offensive coordinator and mentor to the Manning family of quarterbacks was introduced as the Blue Devils' head coach Saturday.

And while the coach with deep Southeastern Conference ties promised no quick fixes, he pledged to propel the Duke program back to relevance.

"There are no magic dusts, there are no ways that are easy to get this done," Cutcliffe said. "But we'll be on a fast track to get it done."

True, but you gotta admit - the guy deserves another chance. Hopefully he can mold the Blue Devils into a more competitive team.

The 1938 team is one of just three in college football history to ever go unbeaten, untied and unscored upon in the regular season. Wallace Wade's "Iron Dukes" played in the Rose Bowl that year but lost 7-3 to USC. Wade coached the Blue Devils for 16 years, going 110-36-7. So, yeah, they were relevent at one time. Maybe Cutcliffe can get them there again, who knows?
