Redick Wins Sullivan Award

NEW YORK (AP) -- Duke star J.J. Redick won the Sullivan Award on Wednesday night, becoming the first men's basketball player since Bill Walton in 1973 to be honored as the nation's top amateur athlete. Redick beat out Texas quarterback Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to a national title with a win in the Rose Bowl over Southern California and its two Sullivan Award finalists -- Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

Redick over Young and Bush...Everyone Agree? Yes? No? Maybe?

Re: Redick Wins Sullivan Award over Young

I understand why - the football players probably split the vote amongst themselves. I guess he's a good selection, but I think I would've gone with Bush personally. Of course, there's also probably somebody in some under-the-radar sport somewhere that had a dominant year and never had a chance of winning this award.

A list of past winners (since 1980) shows that it is seldom football, and usually goes to an Olympic type sport. In the 80's tracked dominated it...I followed track, and remember some of the performances that got them there. (PS...hey Lefty, I got the list from your fav source -Wikipedia...)

Re: Redick Wins Sullivan Award over Young

That's right... its the best amateur athlete, not college. That had slipped my mind. I guess more than anything, then, this is a testament to how poorly our guys and gals did in the Winter Olympics this year, then, eh?

Re: Redick Wins Sullivan Award

Does Vince Young ever not get snubbed for individual recognition?
