The percentage of African-Americans playing Major League Baseball is at an all-time low and Gary Sheffield says he has a theory why that's the case.

In an interview with GQ magazine that's currently on newsstands, the typically outspoken Tigers designated hitter said Latin players have replaced African-Americans as baseball's most prevalent minority because they are easier to control.

"I called it years ago. What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out. … [It's about] being able to tell [Latin players] what to do -- being able to control them," he told the magazine.

"Where I'm from, you can't control us. You might get a guy to do it that way for a while because he wants to benefit, but in the end, he is going to go back to being who he is. And that's a person that you're going to talk to with respect, you're going to talk to like a man.

"These are the things my race demands. So, if you're equally good as this Latin player, guess who's going to get sent home? I know a lot of players that are home now can outplay a lot of these guys."

Sheffield cannot be given a free pass on this after what happened to Imus. Imus got what he deserved for his statements, and Sheffield should be called on the carpet as well. I would expect to hear from baseball's Latin community, perhaps Ozzie Guillen, in the near future.

Imus was an idiot, but no worse an idiot than a lot of people out there...I am not so sure I like us so PC that a person can't apologize, get a suspension and then go back to work.

was what Imus said was more racist than what sheffield said? or vice versa? thats the question..sheff may get a suspension but mr 13 hr so far will still play ball for detroit, right or wrong thats how it is..

Nope...they were both idiots and evens up...but you do not see third parties with vested interest making a freakin federal case out of Sheff...

Heck, I am Latin, and I could care less about what he said...I think he's an idiot...I also think he has every right to be an idiot and still be able to play ball.

Like wise, Imus is an idiot, but he apologize...and he should have been able to retain his job after whatever suspension etc was appropriate...

i think a part of this is being missed

i would say he insulted other black players and of course he insulted Latin players, but i think he also insulted all owners and managers with this statement ....... making it sound to me like they are all trying to be almost slave owners only getting players that dont have any mind of their own

thats something i saw anyway, maybe im reading it way off
