In 1969, a year after the Tigers won their third World Series, the American League added the Seattle Pilots and Kansas City Royals, split itself into East and West divisions and instituted a playoff series to determine its World Series representative.

The Tigers have appeared in three such series 1972,'84 and '87. before this year.

good article on the history of the Tigers in the playoffs. Just how good is this years team? Certainly not better than the 84 team, but are they better than the 72 and 87 teams?
