He wanted out. Wonder if he desperately wanted to play for NYR, who also now have Ward and Cullen from the Canes.
Shanahan said he felt as if he identified more with the Detroit past, not future.

maybe someone should check with his wife...ala Pronger and what's his name...the Leaf defensive dude....maybe she wants to live in the big apple...and hey...you know might be better than Detroit.

Exactly...last week I met the mom of a major leaguer on a flight...she said when her husband was playing pro ball...they loved California...hated Detroit...so not all cities are created equal.

The Rangers are making a big splash but these are usually the types of moves that hurt the Rangers - the signing of big stars. Who can argue with Shanahan and Ward though? It'll be interesting to see if the Rangers build on last year or go back to their same old ways.

Shanahan is still a good player, but he tends to run out of gas as the playoffs approach. He was a real dud for the Red Wings last spring.
