Re: Legace sitting by the phone from nhl.com: 2.19 GAA (third in the NHL) and .915 save percentage, fifth among NHL goalies last season with 37 wins and placed fifth in voting for the Vezina Trophy as the league's top netminder - an award voted on by NHL GMs. so it's weird. They say fla (where auld is) or st Louis maybe, but all the starter jobs are taken. he also is quoted as saying Red Wings (who were bidding big for gerber and lost out to Ott) are now looking at belfour or hasek. are they certifiably insane? belfour or hasek? Do they want to talk to my husband's grandmother too?

Re: Legace sitting by the phone How can a guy be a top 5 goalie one year and most likely forced to ride the pine the following season? Unfathomable. And why in the world would Detroit dump him for either Belfour or the Dominator? At this stage in their careers, maybe if you piece the two together, Frankenstein-style, you could get a decent netminder, but...

Re: Legace sitting by the phone Lefty, the Red Wings didn't dump Legace. He just chose to leave if he couldn't be the starter. After his sub-par playoff performance, the Wings weren't about to promise he would have that role. As we all know now, he wound up with the St. Louis Blues. I always liked him, and I wish him well with the Blues.

Re: Legace sitting by the phone I think what the big question was, why did Legace get dumped, but why didn't Detroit stand by him? They have hasek now. That's some gamble they are taking, and I'd like to see Legace do well in St. louis too.

Re: Legace sitting by the phone Legace had to play airtight in the playoffs to win, because both Pavel Datysuk and Brendan Shanahan were way, way below their regular season form. The Wings weren't scoring many goals, so they had to do nearly everything right to win. Obviously, the failures of others weren't Legace's fault. But, because the Wings were eliminated earlier than the organization thought was reasonable, he was the designated scapegoat.

Re: Legace sitting by the phone I'm not really sure. I think he was told, directly or indirectly, that the Wings were ready to go in a new direction, which suggested that it might be a good time for him to look around. It's likely that his subpar playoff numbers played a role in the organization's decision to seek a new approach.
