Lions offensive tackle
Jeff Backus on Monday agreed to the one-year offer he received when designated the team's franchise player in February.
That means his salary will be the average of the five top-paid players at his position from the previous season, or $6.98 million.
Backus could have also signed with other teams, but the
Lions would have been able to match another team's offer or receive two first-round draft choices if they decided to let him go. As part of the deal, the
Lions agreed not to designate Backus as their franchise player in 2007. If Backus and the
Lions do not agree to a long-term contract, he will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2006 season.
Wow, linemen have come a long way...$7 mil for a season...I remember the day where players like Roger Staubach were gettting $200K a season...I am in the wrong profession.
