Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz Could Leave Detroit Lions, Head to San Francisco 49e

Just about everyone seems to agree that Mike Martz is done as the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator after Sunday's game.

So where will Martz, the offensive genius who got a Super Bowl ring as the Rams' coordinator and made it to another Super Bowl as their head coach, end up? It could be San Francisco, where the 49ers are desperate for a coach who can make former No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith look like a real, live NFL quarterback.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times reports
that San Francisco is expected to offer Martz its coordinator position. The current offensive coordinator, Jim Hostler, will almost certainly be fired, as the 49ers' offense has been nothing short of atrocious this year.

There are two questions, though: First, frankly, in what way is 49ers head coach Mike Nolan more qualified to be a head coach than Martz is? If you're going to hire Martz, why not also can Nolan and put Martz in charge.

Secondly, is there any way of knowing that Martz will even want Smith to be the starter in 2008, let alone have any confidence that he can turn Smith into a star? Martz is very particular about his quarterbacks, and for the most part, his success has been in building up lightly regarded players like Kurt Warner, Trent Green, Marc Bulger and Jon Kitna, not coaching top prospects like Smith. Martz is a great offensive coach, but that doesn't make him a great fit in San Francisco.

The Lions should do everything in their power to keep him. They have the weapons to make the second coming of the "greatest show on turf".

Could he be going to SF because he thinks it will be closer to obtaining a head coaching job.

Exactly. If you're going after Martz anyway, put him in charge of the show. Nolan isn't working out anyway, so why not?
