| Damien Woody Update Damien Woody still is in a reducing phase in his offseason conditioning program, but he doesn't plan on disappearing from his starting position on the Lions' offensive line. Woody, who has been on a well-publicized diet, plans to be the starting guard when the Lions open the regular season at Oakland on Sept. 9. "That's what I expect," Woody said Monday. Woody had just finished participating in a 90-minute practice that is part of the Lions' official offseason workout program. For now, Woody's thoughts are preparation and the conditioning routine that will get him ready for the season. "I'll deal with training camp when it comes," Woody said. "I'm just building right now. Everything else, I'll deal with as it comes." Woody recently heard speculation he might be a target for one of the roster cuts that teams make after June 1, when the salary-cap ramifications can be spread out. Woody has played three seasons on the six-year contract he signed when he came to the Lions as a free agent in 2004. His base salary for 2007 is $4.5 million, a significant jump over the $1.75 million he made last year. Woody's signing bonus with the Lions was $9 million. If the Lions cut him now, the total salary-cap hit would be $4.5 million -- equal to his base salary -- but only $1.5 million would count against the '07 cap. The other $3 million would take effect in '08. "This is a business," Woody said. "Definitely, things can happen. I don't have any control over that. My whole focus is getting ready for the season. I'm just focused on getting my body right." Woody checked into Duke University's weight-loss program Feb. 4. On March 19, he had lost 31 pounds, down to 347. He has continued to lose weight, although not at the same rate as in the first six weeks of the program. There is no mandatory weigh-in until training camp. He plans to play at about 325 pounds. His assigned weight last year was 335. The Lions are pleased with the progress. Weight always will be an issue for Woody, but he doesn't want it to be a hindrance to his career. "Even though I'm still coming down, it's always going to be something that I'm going to have to deal with," he said. "Now I think I have the tools to handle it better."
