Going against present evidence and assuming the Ford family's patience is finite, surely 2007 marks the do-or-die year for Lions General Manager Matt Millen. Ironically enough, Johnson may just save Millen's neck with a killer year when the truth is that Johnson's presence should have been redundant long ago on a club that drafts high-round WRs as a matter of course.
Again, it's not that Johnson is a bad pick, it's just that drafting wide receivers in the first round is a risky proposition at best. The list has run on RF365 before, but here's the enumeration of first-rounders -- not including Lions -- taken in the past three years: Mark Clayton, Braylon Edwards, Lee Evans, Larry Fitzgerald, Santonio Holmes, Matt Jones, Roddy White and Reggie Williams. A mixed bag, eh?
Oh, and in case Mr. M has forgotten his own additions to the WR draft-day conundrum, throw in washout Mike Williams and criminally underrated Roy Williams (he played in the Pro Bowl last February, but as a replacement despite finishing third in receiving yardage, first in NFC receiving yardage and with a higher yards per reception mark than any other 'Bowler). And here's a list of receivers who have been taken at No. 2 this decade: Johnson and Charles Rogers.
Might another bad gamble be enough to finally get Millen ejected from the Detroit?
