Johnson Stars At Mini Camp

In his first practice with the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Calvin Johnson gave a preview of why he was the second player taken in the draft.

Johnson showed speed, agility and catching ability in a 90-minute practice Friday morning. It was the first practice of a three-day rookie camp.

"He looked great out there," said quarterback Drew Stanton, a second-round draft pick from Michigan State. "Obviously, he's everything he was advertised. It's a matter of us getting on the same page and me feeling comfortable with the offense. There are a lot of options for him to do great things."

Asked what the former Georgia Tech star did to impress him, Stanton replied:

"Just a playmaker. He comes out of his routes pretty fast, obviously, with his stride length. He'll go up and make plays for you.

"All those things you want in a receiver, he brings to the table."

Johnson said he had a mild virus and did not feel 100 percent healthy, and he was breathing heavily after the morning practice.

"We're a little winded out here, the first practice and everything," Johnson said. "As the week goes on, we'll get better. I'm trying to put everything we talked about in meetings on the field. It's easier said than done, trying to smooth everything out."

Johnson was reluctant to grade himself on his first practice.

"I can't really give myself a grade," he said. "I'm still trying to learn this stuff. After I learn it, I can give myself a grade."

Re: Johnson Stars At Mini Camp

See, this is what makes Johnson so great. He goes out and wows everyone with his speed and rout running, all while still trying to learn the system and fighting off illness. This kid is a real phenom, and I for one can't wait to see him work in the Mike Martz offense. He's gonna make all the naysayers eat their words.
