Lions fanblogs and chatrooms are full of a sunny optimism the likes of which hasn't been seen in Detroit since...oh, at least since Mariucci's hiring. And Simeon Rice has been well-quoted with a few choice lines delivered upon the announcement of Marinelli's new gig in January, hyperbolic statements ("the best coach in the NFL. Period," etc.) that continue to make the rounds in Motor City media.
Oh, wait. That was from a piece posted at RealFootball365.com by a writer who shall (cough, cough) remain nameless, a dude swept up in the hype caused by the taking on of Rod "Mr. Excitement" Marinelli. That same idgit had the Lions going 9-7; and people wonder why my editor doesn't make season prognostications...
This season will surely kick off without the pretense, the tantalizing illusion again stripped away thanks to a 3-13 season that was supposed to represent a step forward for the hapless silver-and-Honolulu blue. Instead, Lions fans now hold the bottom spot on The Worldwide Leader in [American] Sports' oft-recycled "Fan Satisfaction Ratings."
