Mike Martz

On Wednesday, former St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz agreed to become the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. So after first agreeing last week and then changing his mind, he's apparently changed his mind again. Assuming he doesn't have a change of heart yet again, what does everyone think about this hiring.

Under Martz, the Rams had the top-ranked passing teams in the league from 1999 through 2001, and in terms of total offense they were one of the 10 best units in this category during each of the last seven seasons. The way I see it, if anyone can get Harrington, Rodgers and company going, it's Martz. Say what you will about the guy, but he knows how to run an offense.

As a head coach, Martz is clueless and a duntz. But as an offensive genius, he's just that. Great hire by the Lions.

I'm loving the hires they've made, now only if they can get rid of that pesky GM. Seriously though, Marinelli will be great for them.

Question is, is Harrington their QB or will they search for a new one in the draft or free agency?

Martz

Now, all Martz needs to recreate a Rams-type team are actual players that can make an impact. Remember, the speed the Rams had when Martz was calling the plays was impressive. Plus, he had Warner who played like a Hall of Fame QB for a couple of seasons. Martz wasn't out there slinging passes. He's busted as a head coach and I think he'll bust in Detroit. Everyone else does - what makes Martz any different?

Because he has a history of taking guys like a former Arena League quarterback and a mid-round pick from West Virginia and making them into Pro Bowl calibre players. Now, he's being handed a bunch of No. 1 draft picks -- underachieving No. 1 draft picks, but certainly guys who were taken No. 1 for a reason -- and molding them into his highly successful offense. I can't say for sure that ANYONE can turn these guys around, but with Martz's track record as an offensive coordinator (which is all he'll be in Detroit), I think he's the guy.

Re: Players praise Martz as brilliant, demanding coach

So far, it looks like Lions players have nothing but good things to say about their new offensive coordinator. Detroit tight end called Mike Martz "an offensive genius. His offense... I've never seen anything like it, even on film." Likewise, center Dominic Raiola said "He's got the smartest offensive mind I've been around in my six years in the league." Martz has got the players buying into his scheme. The only question remaining is, will it work in Detroit as well as it worked in St. Louis?
