Still, when coach Mike Shanahan praised the former Vanderbilt star's ability to break the huddle and call a play following the first day of camp, more than a few eyebrows were raised. Cutler said Shanahan was giving him too much credit.
"I had a general idea of the plays, but as far as formations and reads, I had no clue," he said, laughing at his own struggles. "That first day was a little rough, but I felt like I got a little better each day." As for Shanahan, he seemed pleased with Cutler's early progress but added that the player he traded up to acquire in the draft is not in the same situation Elway faced when he arrived from Stanford in 1983 to become the face of the franchise.

I am starting to like this kid a bit more than Matt Leinart...at least there are no report of Jay hanging out with the likes of Paris Hilton...

Re: Bronco QB Cutler learning playbook

True. So true. Culter's in camp working on learning the playbook while Leinart's out painting the town red. That could be very telling. Cutler isn't as far along as the ex-USC QB right out of college, but at this rate, he could catch up in no time. Still, I was shocked to hear, elsewhere, that Shanahan maaaaay just be thinking about having Cutler open the season under center. Can't help but feel that'd be a mistake.

I think he is only trying to build up the rookie...I really don't see him doing that...he is expressing a vote of confidence..

Re: Bronco QB Cutler learning playbook

I sure hope that's the case. Starting Cutler now wouldn't do Shanahan, Cutler, or the Broncos playoff chances any good whatsoever. Plummer may be unreliable in the big game, or so they say, but at least he's a veteran. He knows the offense and he did have a good season last year. Say what you will about him, but he definitely gives Denver a better chance to win in 2006 than does the rook.
