Javon Walker will undergo surgery on his right knee Friday in Houston, a procedure that figures to sideline the Broncos' top receiver an additional four weeks.
After Walker caught 17 passes for 220 yards in the Broncos' first two games, both wins, fluid began to build up in the same right knee that underwent reconstructive surgery two years ago.
He was limited to two catches for 10 yards in the third game against Jacksonville, then missed the two games. After getting a third week to recover with the bye, the Broncos and Walker were counting on his return against a Steelers team he burned for three touchdowns and 206 yards in total offense in a game last year at Pittsburgh.
"Monday he practiced full speed and looked like he was ready to go," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.
But the knee pain acted up today and it was decided he needed a surgical repair.
"How quickly he comes back I'm not really sure," Shanahan said. "Doctors don't think it's very serious but serious enough to go in there and clean it out."
