Elway: Ex-Bronco Davis should be in HOF

The remaining question for former Broncos RB Terrell Davis: Did the running back play long enough to earn induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? "That's the only thing that's holding him back," Elway said as he walked on the field for the pregame festivities Sunday honoring the Broncos' 1997 Super Bowl team. "His career was great, but it depends what the voters do. Obviously, I think he should be in." ... Davis rushed for 1,117 yards as a rookie, then became the NFL's undisputed top back in the three-year period from 1996-98. He rushed for 1,538 yards in 1996; ran for 1,750 yards and was the Super Bowl MVP in 1997; ran for 2,008 yards while earning the league's MVP award and aiding the Broncos to a second Super Bowl title in 1998. "People who say he doesn't belong in the Hall aren't thinking clearly," said Bubby Brister, Elway's backup during the Super Bowl years. "We don't win two Super Bowls if TD's not a Hall of Fame back those two years." -- Denver Post

I don't think Davis belongs in the Hall of Fame. To me, one of the things that makes you great is longevity. He played 7 seasons, three of which were only partial because he couldn't stay healthy. If you put him in, then you need to make way for guys like Priest Holmes, who has similar numbers.

I'm with legend on this one. Brister's argument that Davis was a Hall of Fame back for those two seasons is ludicrous. You can't be a Hall of Famer in two seasons, or even five. It takes prolonged excellence, and TD - as good as he was - just doesn't have that on his resume.

No argument here. You look at the numbers he put up in the CFL, the Grey Cups he won, plus he even had Americans paying attention to the Canadian League on a regular basis (ESPN even televised games back in the day). If you count Warren Moon's numbers from other leagues, you have to do the same for Flutie, and he is definitely deserving.

Cool Re: Elway: Ex-Bronco Davis should be in HOF

Once again, forget the numbers for a minute.

Terrell Davis was so dominant during a 4-5 year period that he's in - not even a question.

Flutie? Was he a great QB? Not even close. Also, I'm really not into putting guys in from inferior leagues. Warren Moon was a HOF based on his NFL years, alone.

No way Flutie should be in.

Re: Elway: Ex-Bronco Davis should be in HOF

Davis had two great seasons, one for over 2,000 yards, another for over 1,700. Other than that he had another pair of thousand yard years and three injury filled campaigns where he played sparingly. Are you ready to put Jamal Lewis in the Hall of Fame? He has quite similar numbers, and holds the record for most yards in a single game with 295.
