Herding the Broncos getting easier

The Broncos seem to step it up when things look the bleakest, and take a tumble down that very same stairway when things look the best.

Two weeks ago, things looked bleak indeed. They were out of the playoff picture looking in, hoping only to stave off elimination and vacation. They sat behind San Diego, Indianapolis, Baltimore, New England, the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Kansas City Chiefs in the race for a playoff spot. That was eight teams ranking ahead of Denver in a race for six playoff slots.

Then some strange things started happening. The Jets lost two weeks ago at home to Buffalo. Last week, Jacksonville, Kansas City and Cincinnati lost.

And Denver went on the road after four losses in a row and knocked off the Arizona Cardinals, a team that had whomped up on three of its previous four foes and was looking like a burgeoning power, 37-20, a margin that could have been and should have been much worse.

So, where do we sit right now?

The Broncos, all of the sudden are very much in control of their own destiny. They play two games at home. Win those two games and they are the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs.
