Mike Modano Sets Stars Record

Congrats to Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars, for setting a new team record with his 135th career power play goal in a 3-2 win over Calgary on Sunday!

Quote:
Modano set the mark in the second period on Sunday and Niko Kapanen added a short-handed goal to send the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Modano notched his 135th man-advantage goal at 6:18 of the middle frame. He beat Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff on a one-timer from the slot to move in front of Brian Bellows on the team's career list and give the Stars a 2-1 lead.

"It's something I've known I was creeping up on," said Modano, who hasn't played for any other NHL franchise. "It's been fun chasing these numbers and breaking records. I'm fortunate enough to be around long enough to accumulate those numbers and have great players around you to reach those goals."

Modano's been around forever - he scored his first power play goal back in 1988 with the then-Minnesota North Stars, and he's basically been the face of that franchise for the past 15 or so years. What do you guys think about this amazing accomplishment?

A nice accomplishment, I was at the game when he did it. I just want a Stanley Cup, though.

Re: Mike Modano Sets Stars Record

Its about time that Mike got recognized for something. From what I've seen Modano plays hard and has great talent. Sometimes the players around him don't play up to par. This brings a question. Would Wayne Gretsky played just as good with worse players surrounding him? How dependent upon his teamates is a good scorer? Any thoughts?

Re: Mike Modano Sets Stars Record

Scorers need to be surrounded by a good supporting cast. Would Gretzky have done so well without Messier? Hull (Bobby) without Mikita? Lemieux without Jagr?

Then again, Jagr would score if he played with a couple of donkeys.

great for modano, great for the sport but you know, he's never been a real favourite of mine.

Cool Re: Mike Modano Sets Stars Record

He's been a great player.

Does anyone know why in The Olympics, Madano was benched by Peter Laviolette in the very last period of the last USA game- when they desperately needed a goal to advance?

Re: Mike Modano Sets Stars Record

think he was benched because laviolette thought the whole team wasn't playing up to potential and thought he'd do something drastic he says it wasn't about modano, it was about the team in general.
