You know, once upon a time Dallas had a basketball team called the Chapparals, but the people of Dallas were too busy to be bothered to go to basketball games, so the Chaps went down the road to the Alamo City, aka San Antonio, and changed their name to the Spurs. After a few quiet decades they managed to win the World Championship three times in six years. Meanwhile, a few businessman decided that Dallas needed a basketball team again (booyah) and started a new team, but I can't remember their name (no one else can either). The problem is, they're a little boring and hardly ever win, or so it seems. Once upon a time they had this guy named Jason Kidd on the team, and he was pretty good, but then they decided to do like a bunch of other Dallas teams like to do, and traded away one of their best players. Is there something in the water here or what? Anyway, I keep hoping the WNBA will start a franchise in Dallas so that we have an interesting basketball team to watch.

You're right about Dirk -- he is a great player, and frankly the Mavs are doing better lately than they have in a long time. I'm just a little cranky that they can't seem to get it together, while the Rockets and Spurs seem to have great years on a regular basis. Maybe this is the year? We'll see.

Whats the problem with the Mavs this year? They are 39-11. Sure it will probably end like every year because of their lack of defense, but it could be worse. Check out Houston; they have talent but are sitting in last place!

WVU, you sound like Charles Barkley. Don't know how many Mavs games you've watched this year, but their defense is far better than it was in previous years. I'm not saying they're better than the Spurs or Pistons, but Avery Johnson has completely made over that team.

Sounds like a compliment to me; Barkley was a great player, and surely knows more about basketball than either one of us! Yes, they have improved on defense, but enough to win a title? I hope so, I have always liked Cuban being that he is a Pittsburgh guy and all. They have had a good first half of the season. Hopefully they can continue their solid play.

Folks, I stand chastised. Looks like Team Dallas is going into mid-season as the best team in the West. The Mavs clearly aren't the "Allas, Mavericks" the used to be. Here's hoping Dirk and the guys keep it up in the second half of the season. Let's hope their defense holds out. Still wish they hadn't traded Nash, though. He's kicking butt this year. But then you can't please some people, and I may be one of them.
