Special teams coach Read fired

Only a couple of days after Jerry Jones emphatically stated that all the coaching staff would stay in place for the next season, Special teams coach Bruce Read was fired.

There is good reason perhaps. Last year the Cowboys were:
  • 31st in kickoff distance;
  • 26th in kickoff yardage allowed;
  • 21st in kickoff returns;
  • 17th in punting;
  • 23rd in punt yardage allowed;
  • 24th in net punting
  • 30th in punt returns;
  • tied for 26th in scoring.

Let's see what JJ has in mind for a replacement. I could never understand why our Special Teams have been so bad the past decade or so. It didn't help that we lost our punter early in the season either.

Who will be the replacement is the tricky question. Hope he doesnt skimp in this area.
Losing McBriar was bad. He is about the best there is. It hurt us a lot. Palescu or whatever his name is just didnt do the job. Really bad field position many times.

I think they need to look more towards the "head" of the situation and fire there.

I know, but I'm afraid if we don't make a move on Phillips now, it will be too late to make a coaching change during pre-draft workouts, the draft, and the summer. The sooner we make a decision on the coach the easier it will be for a new coach to get settled in, adjust, and set up his coaching staff. My gut is telling me that there is a 80% chance that Jerry will actually keep Phillips. That's where the basis of my bad vibes is coming from.

Sorry, thought you were referring to special teams.
Actually, I have those same bad vibes. I dont think he plans on changing head coaches. Still, sometimes the more Jerry proclaims one thing to be true, the more likely it is that he has something else in mind. I most certainly hope so in this case.
Shall we still count on Romo as our starter? I believe it was you who said draft a qb with the potential to replace Romo or a veteran. I hear you saying Mr. Romo needs a bit of pressure, am I right? He doesnt have anything to worry about right now in that regard-- Johnson and Bollinger. I am not dissing Johnson, he was a good qb and game manager but his best days are long gone. Bollinger is a joke.
Just wondering if you have any faith left in Tony.

Regarding Romo....I'm torn. At times, I think we're a little rough on Tony. He's 3 years into the starting role, so I think at times we should give him a break. But then the other side, he doesn't seem to be the tough team leader that we need him to be. He doesn't seem to have that fire in the gut that players like Aikman, Favre, P. Manning, and Young have. However, it doesn't mean it can't be developed....everyone knocked Eli Manning, all the way up to the Super Bowl.....yet he delivered. I'm more afraid of us losing our window of opportunity. I believe it is much smaller than most think.

That leads me to my comment about drafting a suitable backup.....who can either push Tony for the starting job or be a reasonable replacement. That will at least give me a good feeling......San Diego did it successfully with Brees & Rivers. I don't think it is a far fetched idea. I am beginning to lose confidence in Romo in tough situations. I've already mentioned my comparison to Vinnie Testaverde.....I still stand by the comparison. A baseball comparison would be A-Rod.....great when it doesn't count.....disappears when it's on the line.

I think Tony needs to take the offseason and work on his mental game. I think he needs to stay away from Jessica Simpson......I know I'm gonna hear the "but he has a life too"........yes he does have a life......centered around the Cowboys! Stop with the distractions. Work on getting tough mentally. Sometimes all it takes is some introspection.

My 2 cents.

Re: Special teams coach Read fired

I like your two cents S711.
Sometimes, I too, am not sure about Tony. And he hasnt been starting all that long.
No, not much fire in Tony. He just simply is having fun. Now Brett Favre had fun, but he also had a bigger passion for winning.
Right now Tony Romo is quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. That should be his number one priority. I have seen guys who have real problems in their family life who still manage to focus on their game. Just off the top of my head I think of the kicker Bryant from the Bucs who lost his young son. Jessica is just playtime for Tony.
make up your mind Tony, who you want to be.
