| Watkins looking for second chance to shine After Darren Woodson retired in 2004 due to injuries, the Cowboys started to look for the right free safety to play opposite Roy Williams. In 2006 they drafted Patrick Watkins with the hope that he would develop into that free safety. In high school and college he was one of the premier free safeties in the nation. Looking at tape though, scouts believed that his speed and ball skills allowed him to make up for mistakes in pass coverage. He won the starting safety position but his inexperience in the NFL and his lack of awareness in pass defense made him inconsistent. Sometimes he would make an athletic play on the ball but more often he was out of position and got beat. After a benching by Parcells, he came back and excelled at special teams as well as showing an improvement in pass coverage. Watkins needed more time to develop so the Cowboys signed Ken Hamlin. This gave Watkins the time he needed to learn without being pushed into the starter role. If Watkins grows enough at free safety, the Cowboys can move Hamlin to strong safety and keep Anthony Henry at cornerback. It would also give them the ability to move Roy Williams anywhere they needed to maximize his strengths. http://www.goteamsgo.com/forum/footb...i-am-ines.html Because of injuries, the secondary has been a weak link in the defense. If Watkins turns up the heat, this could give them more depth. No mention was made of Pacman in this article.
