Question Cowboys To Ignore Rooney Rule

it appears the Dallas Cowboys have set themselves up to ignore the Rooney Rule ....... the NFL's policy that teams needing a new head coach must interview minority candidates

most everyone seems to agree that Jason Garrett is already in place as the person in to be the next head coach after Wade Phillips ...... many also think Jerry Jones has already told Garrett the job is his when available

just what is it that makes Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys think they are above the rules ?

(for the record i dont like the Rooney Rule ...... if Belichick retires at the end of this season .. and Bill Cowher calls the Patriots and tells them he wants the job .. they would be foolish to offer it to someone else ... and any interview other then Cowher would just be for show)

Re: Cowboys To Ignore Rooney Rule

Does that rule prohibit you from promoting from within?? Should they have to interview someone just to do it, and give them false hope???

The rule is a joke. And not because of this situation. The Cowboys can interview anyone the NFL wants them to, but if it is Jerry Jones desire to promote Garrett, then that is what can/should happen.

I think it is more unfair to waste anyones time with that process, regardless of color.

Re: Cowboys To Ignore Rooney Rule

Doing a little speculating here, simon? Everyone assumes Garrett is being groomed for the job. But no interviewing for HC, no talk from the Cowboys organization. Looks like you are a little ahead of yourself.
And phils is right. Does the rule apply to promoting from with in? They can still interview other candidates when the time is right, which is a waste of time as Phils said.
There are a number of black coaches in the league now. So Rooney feels like the rule has been successful. See the following link

Woah there, they haven't done anything wrong...yet.

I'm all for knocking the Cowboys but you're just assuming that is what they'll do.

Marvin Lewis did the same thing when he was with Washington. Resigned there and waited for a better opening to come along.

Look, Garrett's making $3 million a year. If you can collect a head coach's paycheck for doing a coordinators job, why wouldn't you?

of course i would .... i dont blame Garrett at all .... in fact i dont so much blame the Cowboys ..... more then anything i blame the Rooney Rule for being a lame rule imo

but having said all that ... it's still a rule that the team should abide by or face consequences

Well, if the rumblings are true, it won't be a rule much longer. The league realizes that, while good intentioned, it is very much flawed.

Yes, I believe all you really have to do, is interview someone for the job...it is flawed. Having said that, who Jnoes wants to hire is his business...the lays out the cash, he takes the risk, he makes the call...and promoting within is not a bad thing either.

Maybe because he wanted more money??????????????

You got that reaction from Empire because he is open minded.

Didnt say that you werent. Dont put words into my posts that werent there. Actually, you are very open minded except when it comes to the Cowboys. ADMIT IT!

Well, what did you mean that you expected the reaction you got from the Dallas homers?

I'm not sure just what you are getting at here.
Maybe they think he is their best bet for the future. Kind of like when they pay a player lots of money that he's not really worth just to keep him on the roster. If they would like to make him head coach, its not because he isnt black. Jones likes Garrett so naturally that gives Garrett an edge. You make it sound like because they think they would like Garrett to be their head coach, they are deliberately flouting the Rooney rule and they're not. They will of course, still have to go through the process of interviews.
If they do deliberately flout the Rooney rule, I will be right there with you in the front line criticizing their decision. Till then, its making mountains out of molehills.
