Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romo

When it comes to analyzing great quarterbacks, there aren't many who do it better than Troy Aikman. After all, he was one for more than a decade. So when Aikman is ready to put another quarterback into the category of "great," it carries more weight than the average guy.
And on the subject of Tony Romo, Aikman has simply seen enough.

Not only is Aikman ready to place the greatness tag on Romo, but he doesn't understand why Romo's name isn't mentioned more with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
"Over the last several weeks, there's always the debate - who do you take, Brady or Manning?" Aikman said. "Then they start saying clearly, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are the top quarterbacks and then next is . . . but somewhere in there is Romo, but we're not ready to put him there just yet. Well, why aren't you? No, really, why is anyone reluctant to put Romo up there with those guys?

Aikman also said Romo is having an MVP-type season, though he knows it won't happen because of what Brady is doing in New England.
"The thing that's disappointing is that I think Brady wins the MVP hands down," Aikman said. "But in any other year, (Romo) runs away with it

Ok, all you doubters out there. One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time says Romo is one of the best today.
He's been there, done that and I tend to agree with him.

Re: Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romo

wow thats definatly a compliment, i think he is a very good QB with the POTENTIAL to be great but he is only like a second year starter and i dont think he has played THAT well to be considered great yet, but i think he is on his way without a doubt.

but do you think he would be considered great if it wasnt for TO? i mean that has always been a question that has plagued me, would Manning be as great if it wasnt for Wayne and Harrison?

Re: Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romeo

I think we can say that he is here to stay, but greatness comes with time! I do think Troys opinion is fine though.

He has been more than critical over the years, and has been pretty objective over the years. Hell, even the Eagles fans respect his opinions. If they can get over the Star, then I think he has shown his objectivity!

I think Romo is on his way, but we'll keep the crown under lock and key, until theytake the Super Bowl. Which won't be long!

That about sums it up perfectly. He's good, but he hasn't achieved "greatness" just yet.

Cool Re: Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romo

He's defenitely got the potential to be great, but we need to see it over a longer period. Give Parcells credit for signing this guy, he wasn't even drafted.

Re: Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romo

Ok guess I better 'fess up here. I took a little literary freedom here. I wanted to see what you guys said. Actually the title of the article was Aikman Ready to place Greatness Tag on Romo. He hasnt crowned Tony yet. He just says he is very very good.
And Lefty, Troy is always very critical of the Cowboys. He bends over backwards not to show any favoritism.
And to answer alex's question, yes I think the quarterbacks in question would be great without those receivers. I think they would find a way to make things happen. If it wasnt for those receivers, they would simply develop rapport with another.

yeah i can see that, its just been a question ive always been curious about becuase its obviously not something we can go back and assess and you always wonder would someone like David Carr been a better QB at the Texans had he had better recievers and a better O Line.

but can anyone else see Romo going the way of Brady...you know, guy coming in becuase expreienced veteran cant do the job and goes on to become one of the best of a generation?

I think he already has alex. Bledsoe most certainly wasnt getting the job done. Hmm, actually thats interesting now that I think about it. Both Brady and Romo learned behind Bledsoe. Of course, Romo says he got a lot of his work ethic from Testaverde.

I think you can call someone a great quaterback based on a small body of work...I think long term achievement is something else...right now, it does seem like Tony has few peers...and I think that is what Aikman is saying.

Re: Aikman places Greatness Tag on Romo

I would agree he seems to be heading down the right path to attain greatness but ... Ben Roethlisberger looked great once also.

See I disagree, I dont think Big Ben ever looked great, I think he is an average QB who won a superbowl his 1st year in the pros, He did enough to get wins, I believe charlie Batch couldve done the same thing, Its different with Romo though, hes above average, he shows flashes of all-star capability, Hes been a huge part to why the Cowboys have been so successful this year.. Some of the stuff he does you cant teach..

Totally agree...A winning gunslinger verses a game manager on a great Defense...Tony Romo over Big Ben hands down.
