Cowboys Sign Tony Romo to Six-Year, $67.5 Million Contract Extension

ESPN's Ed Werder and Matt Mosley are reporting that the Dallas Cowboys have signed quarterback Tony Romo to a six-year, $67.5 million contract, with $31 million guaranteed.

That makes Romo one of the highest-paid players in NFL history. Romo was scheduled to become a free agent after this season, and there had been conflicting reports about how much Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would be willing to pay to keep him. Apparently, he was willing to pay a lot.

Romo is in his first full season as the Cowboys' starter after taking over for Drew Bledsoe during the 2006 season. Through the first 17 starts of his NFL career, Romo has completed more than 64 percent of his passes, with 35 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Werder and Mosley report that the deal will be officially announced at a press conference tomorrow morning.

Wow! guess the girls will really be swarming him now.

wonder what that does to Jerry's salary cap and bottom line?

I guess we can look forward for a big increase in ticket prices after the new stadium is opened...

I guess this is a product of the hype machine. Everyone wants to dub him the best QB in the NFC, it seems like, and the third best in the league behind them guys in Boston and Indy. Well, looks like he's going to get paid like it now. Personally, I'd like to see more than 1 1/2 good seasons out of a guy before giving him this kind of money, but hey - I'm not Jerry Jones.

$31 MILLION guarantee?...that's crazy money...and I am a Dallas fan...

Imagine what Staubach would command these days...Roger won 76 out of his first 100 starts and a Super Bowl his first year as a starter.

Re: Cowboys Sign Tony Romo to Six-Year, $67.5 Million Contract Extension

The Dallas Morning News has the details on the new contract signed by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
He receives an $11.5 million signing bonus, a guaranteed base salary of $6 million in 2007 (up from a non-guaranteed $1.5 million under his current deal), a guaranteed base salary of $6.5 million in 2008, a base salary in 2009 of $7 million, $6 million of which is guaranteed, and non-guaranteed base salaries in 2010 through 2013 of $8.5 million, $9 million, $9 million, and $11.5 million.
So the total guarantee isn't $31 million, but it's $30 million. (Apparently, the initial reports assumed that all of the 2009 salary is guaranteed.)
Also, Romo's guaranteed newmoney is more like $28.5 million, since guaranteeing his $1.5 million base salary (nearly 8/17ths of which he has already earned) is meaningless.
What were the Cowboys going to do, cut him? That $1.5 million was already in the bank.
And if we're going to count the $1.5 million that he already was scheduled to make in 2007 within his total take, it's a seven-year, $69 million contract. Which means that the average value is less than $10 million per year.
Maybe Romo didn't want more. But he definitely could have gotten more if he'd let this thing play out.

I read somewhere that he said his agents dont want to hear this, but $100, or $100 million. He loves the game enough to play for anything.

ya know, i basically thought the same thing .... but then i was listening to the radio at work today ....... and now i see it differently

its a product of todays market ....... Russell got $30 million guaranteed and he has never played a down in the NFL .... seems Romo should rate as high as Russell imo
