Thumbs up Chargers' Loss, Cowboys' Gain

The San Diego Chargers had nothing but nice things to say about Phillips, their defensive coordinator the past three seasons. And why not, the Chargers were the NFL's 10th-ranked defense in 2006.

"We'd like to congratulate Wade Phillips on being named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys," San Diego head coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "He's done an outstanding job as the Chargers' defensive coordinator over the past three seasons. Under his guidance, our defense has established itself as one of the best units in the NFL. Wade's ability to organize and teach will provide the Cowboys with success in the near future."

The Cowboys played a very vanilla 3-4 defense, as former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells preferred his guys to man up against the offense along the front seven and try to win one-on-one battles. But the Chargers insist the Cowboys' defenders will prefer playing Phillips' 3-4 scheme.

"It's going to be great for Dallas' defense," Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo said. "Those guys are going to love his system. They've been in a straight-forward 3-4 defense where they were two-gapping. They're going to do a lot more moving, a lot more blitzing. They're going to have a lot more opportunities to make plays.

"Wade is a guy who is always calm and collected. He knows football and has been around a ton of great players. He knows how it's supposed to be done. He's going to get those guys playing hard and playing right."

And then there was this from linebacker Shaun Phillips:

"He's a player's coach. He knows how to utilize everyone's ability and get the most out of them. I've never been around a coach like that before. I know he's going to do a good job in Dallas because Wade is a great coach and they have a lot of talent."
